The Advising Relationship
Students have many decisions to make during their college careers. The relationship between advisor and advisee can be central in the decision-making process. Whether you are choosing an elective, changing your major, or planning for a career or graduate school, your advisors can be valuable resources. As in all important relationships, each party shares responsibility for the outcomes.
Student Role
- Familiarize yourself with the curriculum & policies of the college
- Meet regularly with your advisor(s) and allow him/her to get to know you
- Be prepared when you attend an advising session
- Obtain faculty advisor signature prior to course enrollment
- Assume responsibility for getting the most out of your education
- Ask questions!
Advisor Role
- Assist in setting and clarifying realistic goals
- Monitor progress toward educational goals (e.g. skills acquisition, degree completion)
- Interpret college policy
- Be available for consultation
- Connect students with additional campus resources as appropriate (e.g. counseling services, study abroad opportunities, internships)
- Support the development of independent decision-making skills
