The Advising Relationship

Students have many decisions to make during their college careers. The relationship between advisor and advisee can be central in the decision-making process. Whether you are choosing an elective, changing your major, or planning for a career or graduate school, your advisors can be valuable resources. As in all important relationships, each party shares responsibility for the outcomes.

Student Role

  • Familiarize yourself with the curriculum & policies of the college
  • Meet regularly with your advisor(s) and allow him/her to get to know you
  • Be prepared when you attend an advising session
  • Obtain faculty advisor signature prior to course enrollment
  • Assume responsibility for getting the most out of your education
  • Ask questions!

Advisor Role

  • Assist in setting and clarifying realistic goals
  • Monitor progress toward educational goals (e.g. skills acquisition, degree completion)
  • Interpret college policy
  • Be available for consultation
  • Connect students with additional campus resources as appropriate (e.g. counseling services, study abroad opportunities, internships)
  • Support the development of independent decision-making skills
