So, what happens in the Student Writing Center?

  • We usually work one-on-one with writers.
  • We listen to your questions, concerns, and confusions.
  • We ask you how we can help.
  • We help you generate ideas for assignments.
  • We help you understand the editing process.
  • We provide writing resources that students and faculty can use on their own in the lab.

What does NOT happen in the Student Writing Center?

  • We do not judge, criticize, or grade writing.
  • We do not rewrite documents.
  • We do not substitute our ideas for yours.

Can I just drop in for help?

Yes, you can simply drop in for help with your writing; there's no need to make an appointment. However, you are welcome to make an appointment by calling the lab: extension 2518.

How much time will it take?

Because we want to help you get the most out of the lab, plan to spend between 20 and 40 minutes (on average) working in the lab. Some sessions may run longer, others shorter. You'll get the most out of the lab if you leave plenty of time to work with a tutor-and if you avoid stopping in right before a piece of writing is due in a class.

Can I just drop my paper off and pick it up later?

No. The Student Writing Center is a place to learn, not a proofreading service. We work with you, shoulder-to-shoulder. Think of us as writing coaches.
