Thane is a Certified Public Accountant and a Certified Fraud Examiner. She worked for the Boston office of Arthur Andersen where she audited a wide variety of companies from a Presque Isle, Maine commercial bank to a granite company in Concord, NH, as well as several other banks, hospitals, manufacturing companies and the MBTA. Professor Butt was controller of a commercial bank before joining the accounting program at Champlain College.
Her teaching responsibilities include auditing, financial accounting and forensic accounting.
Professor Butt endeavors to instill her enthusiasm and passion for accounting, by demonstrating to students that they can use accounting in a wide variety of companies, industries, and places. Snowboard companies, rock bands and ice cream manufacturers use and depend on accounting information, as well as public accounting firms, captive insurance companies and small businesses.
She is a member of both the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants and the Vermont Society of CPA’s as well as the Association of Certified Fraud Examiners.
Professor Butt is an avid reader, attempts to play bridge, solves sudoku puzzles and finds time to volunteer at the Flynn Theater. She loves to travel and whenever possible she is on the move. Her most memorable adventure was driving cross country with her younger daughter, 3 year old granddaughter, 1 year old grandson to visit her elder daughter who with her husband and their son reside outside of Seattle, WA.
Outside of pursuing professional responsibilities, she enjoys time with her family including her three grandchildren.
