Art and Design, BFA - The Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art

Interdisciplinary Art, MFA - Goddard College

David Lustgarten attended The Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art, which included one year of exchange study at the Kunstgewerbeschule in Basel, Switzerland. After earning his BFA in Art and Design in 1985, he embarked on his professional design career in the office of Rudolph de Harak & Associates, working on print, exhibition and architectural sign projects. David has enjoyed an 18-year career, working both at other studios and as a solo designer in New York and Burlington, Vermont.

In 1998, David taught the first graphic design course offered at Champlain College, and became a member of its full-time faculty in 2000. In 2004 he earned an MFA from Goddard College in Interdisciplinary Art, which included study in art and design history and critical theory, and practice in graphic design, painting, and sculpture. He became director of the design program 2006. Keenly interested in guiding students to a successful career, David advocates a healthy synthesis of both traditional and evolving design practices.

David's is as an ardent campaigner in the Burlington community for bicycle commuting and alternative transportation. He lives in Burlington with his wife and twin sons, and savors the natural beauty of Vermont through hiking, cross country skiing, kayaking, bicycling and simply ‘being here.'
