Kate Baxter

MAJOR: Software Engineering
YOG: Spring, 2009
EXPERIENCE: This past summer (Summer 2008) I had an internship with Tertl Studios, doing educational game/tool development full time in Flex and ActionScript 3.
PAST/CURRENT EMC PROJECTS: In November 2007, I went to CIMIT to demonstrate games and show their uses in the medical field. In October of 2008, I travelled to Orlando for the Learning 2008 conference, developed a game teaching employees about working from home, and currently I am the lead programmer on the CIMIT project, developing a game to help train emergency responders.
AFTER GRADUATION: I hope to find a job in the Boston area doing game development. I'm especially interested in logic/math type games for kids, but I'm passionate about any kind of game development at all. Kids games, serious games, console games, PC games, anything!
FAVORITE ACTIVITIES: Programming (obviously), Flash development, snowboarding, sailing, scuba diving, running, and dancing.
THOUGHTS ON THE EMC: The experiences I've had working with the EMC and GIV-IT have been amazing. I've had a chance to connect with faculty at the school and work with them on a different level. I've had the opportunity to build up my resume and network so I feel prepared and confident. I've had really exceptional experiences that most students aren't able to get until they start working in their field. It's allowed me to prove to myself that this really is what I want to do, and build the skills necessary to be successful.

Dan Bergeron

MAJOR: Marketing Management
YOG: May 2009
EXPERIENCE: I've worked at Stowe Mountain Resort from November of 2008 to the present as a Marketing and Special Events Intern. I was responsible for event promotions and marketing, involved in the local Grassroot Outreach, marketing to correct event demographic, and developing promotions to attract non season pass holders and guests outside the local market. From May of 2008 to the present, I worked for 1-800-GOT-JUNK? I did Onsite sales, customer service, guerilla marketing, marketing agent, truck driving, navigation, and was a hauler of junk. From November 2003 to April 2008, I worked as a Senior League manager at The Soccer Center, where I managed indoor soccer leagues during the winter months. I worked for Kelliher Samets Volk from June 2007 to October 2007 as a Public Relations fellow, and then as an Intern to obtain field experience working with Media Buyers, Brand Managers, and Brand Representatives to gain a brighter insight of real life marketing experience.
PAST/CURRENT EMC PROJECTS: UNFPA - Developing an electronic game to end violence against women in developing countries, targeting males 13-15 years of age.
AFTER GRADUATION?: Work in the ski and snowboard industry with event promotions and guerilla marketing, and work in the action sports industry promoting youth and teen branded companies.
FAVORITE ACTIVITIES: Snowboarding, soccer, running, biking, hiking, and I'm a car enthusiast.
THOUGHTS ON THE EMC: The Emergent Media Center has given me given me the opportunity of a lifetime.  The average college senior is not able to say that they have been to Africa and worked on a project funded by the United Nations. As a marketing student, I have grown to be more culturally inclusive through first-hand experience and primary research.  It is my hope, that new members to the Center and I, are able to fully contribute our skills and knowledge acquired from our various fields of study.  Words cannot fully encompass the gratification I sustain for the Center.  In the upcoming years I am certain that the Center to grow both physically and intellectually.

Casey Hopkins

 MAJOR: e-Business Management
YOG: 2009
EXPERIENCE: Marketing, Web Development and Business classes, as well as Internet Marketing internships at Dealer.com, EatingWell Magazine and EpikOne over the past three years.
PAST/CURRENT EMC PROJECTS: UNFPA Game to End Gender Violence
AFTER GRADUATION?: Hopefully find a sweet job in the Internet Marketing industry, probably doing SEM or SEO, or working with analytics. When I applied for Champlain College, I actually applied as an e-gamer, so I've always had a passion for video games and have always wanted to work with a gaming company. I still do! Recently, I've thought about how cool it would be to work with a big company, like Apple, Starbucks or Google, so maybe I'll head out west someday, or, maybe to Europe. But as for directly after graduation, I guess I'll go where ever the wind (or a job offer) takes me, and if the wind doesn't blow, then I'll stay in the Burlington area for a while.
FAVORITE ACTIVITIES: Skiing, traveling everywhere I can, listening to music, sleeping, playing sweet video games, cooking or baking delicious goodies, and playing with my pets.
THOUGHTS ON THE EMC: The EMC is a fantastic place to work. I love it because it's given me a once in a lifetime chance to not only work on a project for the United Nations as an undergraduate student, but also go to South Africa to collect market and cultural data. Everyone who works here has incredible talent and is highly gifted at what they do. The EMC is especially incredible for the electronic game majors, and as someone outside this field, I can see the potential for great success for everyone here, due to the connections they possess in the gaming field.

Timothy Miner

MAJOR: Electronic Game Design
YOG: 2009
EXPERIENCE: I was a member of the Champlain College Game Developers Association, member of the International Game Developers Association, designed work for Gamma 256, involved with several school based game projects, and was a student recruiter for the Champlain College Montreal campus.
PAST/CURRENT EMC PROJECTS: I am currently working on the Information Literacy project, "Dustin King: Locked and Literate," and am working on the Breath Biofeedback Cystic Fibrosis game tentatively named "Creep Frontier."
AFTER GRADUATION?: I would like to get a game design position outside of the US.  I ultimately would like to become a Creative Director at a studio, but other career choices I may encounter include Producer, teacher (this would involve grad school and possibly leaving the industry), and possible Human Resources/Market.
FAVORITE ACTIVITIES: I enjoy playing video games when I have time to play, exercise, movies, various school activities, a somewhat chaotic nightlife, Frisbee, and other assorted sports.
THOUGHTS ON THE EMC: I like working at the EMC. I think that it still has a lot of things to take care of in terms of various logistics before it becomes a real studio.  If anyone who is considering getting into the game industry needs more real life game creation experience the EMC is the place to go to.
ADDITIONAL COMMENTS: One thing I've already found interesting when working on games is the lesson a person or team can learn when unexpected complications occurring.  I've learned a lot from my mistakes, and ultimately it has made me a better person.
