The Financial Aid Process
The Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) is required for need-based financial aid at Champlain College. Unless otherwise noted, no additional applications are required in order to be considered for federal or institutional scholarship or grant programs. The Financial Aid process is exactly the same for online students as for students who physically attend the campus. The students must meet the eligibility requirements and maintain satisfactory academic progress (information can be found in The Champlain College Student Handbook) to be eligible for Financial Aid.
STEP ONE
Complete and submit the FAFSA
You will complete your FAFSA online (www.fafsa.ed.gov). The FAFSA is our official application for federal aid and is also required by most states in their grant application process. Our Title IV School Code is 003684. Do not submit your FAFSA prior to January 1, 2010, as the federal processor will not accept it.
We encourage you to use completed tax information when completing the FAFSA, but when necessary estimated figures may be used. Financial aid awards based on estimated financial information will be subject to review and revision once taxes are finalized.
STEP TWO
Complete and submit state grant application
Vermont residents may apply for a VSAC grant after January 1st. [VSAC grant application] Students from other states should contact their state grant agency for further information and application procedures.
FILING DEADLINES
For 2010-2011 Academic Year

Late applicants will not be eligible for campus-based aid, but may still be eligible for a Pell grant, VSAC state grant (Vermont residents only) [VSAC grant application] and loans.
Deadlines do not affect loan eligibility.
EARLY ADMISSION DECISION FINANCIAL AID PROCESS
Early Decision Plan I (November 15, 2009)
Family should complete, print and electronically submit the 2009-10 Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Once you submit the FAFSA you will secure a confirmation page. Please mail a printed copy of the FAFSA and the confirmation page to the Financial Aid Office by November 15, 2009. We will use the information on this form to give you an estimate of what your financial aid eligibility will be for the 2010-11 academic year. Prior to March 1, 2010 you should complete the 2010-11 FAFSA and you will be sent a revised award letter with final award amounts.
Early Decision Plan II (January 15, 2010)
Family should complete the 2010-11 FAFSA electronically prior to January 15, 2010.
Notification Dates
- Early Decision Plan I
Notification of estimated aid eligibility will be mailed on December 15, 2009. If your file is complete the final award letter will be sent on March 21, 2010. - Early Decision Plan II
Notification of final awards will be mailed on February 16, 2010.
Conditions for financial aid assistance:
- Must be either a citizen or eligible non-citizen of the United States
- Must have a valid Social Security number
- For federal and institutional aid must be enrolled in a degree program
- For student loans, must be enrolled at least half-time (6 credits)
- Cannot owe a refund on a federal student grant nor be in default on a federal student loan
- Must meet minimum standards of academic progress as outlined in the The Champlain College Student Handbook
