8:00 – 11:30am    Residential Student Move In                        Your Residence Hall

All residence halls open at 8am, so take your belongings to your room and begin settling in.  Also meet your Residential Life Staff and get acquainted with your new neighbors.  


8:00 – 11:30am    Orientation Check In for Residential Students                Hauke Courtyard

Check in at your convenience between 8 and 11:30am to pick up your Orientation packet. All students may pick up their Champlain College ID, drop off outstanding health forms, pick up books, learn about work-study opportunities, sign up for bank accounts, and get settled in during this time.  


8:00 – 11:30am  Nuts and Bolts to Beginning Your College Career                IDX, SLC Fireside Lounge 

If you didn’t have a chance to send us your photo ID come to the SLC and get your picture taken; we’ll make your ID for you to pick up later at the Information Table.  All students are required to register for the campus emergency alert system so make sure to stop by, meet the Campus Public Safety Staff and register.  The emergency alert system notifies students of any emergency or crisis situation occurring on or near campus.  Bring your laptop to get your account set up and receive assistance connecting to the network.  Ski Pass Sign up will also be available so you can get your seasons pass.

Students check in to receive Orientation packets. Make sure to ask about the Commuter Breakfast scheduled for Saturday at 8:00am.

All students, families and friends are invited to enjoy a BBQ.  Students may use this time to tie up any loose ends, say goodbye to friends and family, and celebrate the start of their college career.

Join President David Finney, faculty and staff for an official welcome to Champlain College before students begin a weekend of Orientation activities.  Also hear from the Director of Admission, Ian Mortimer, and a Student Government Association (SGA) Representative as we begin this new adventure together.

Student Orientation begins! You will meet your Orientation Leaders (OL), the other students in the Class of 2013, review the weekend schedule, and begin exploring your new community.  Be sure to wear your nametag.  


3:00 – 4:00pm    Convocation                                Skiff Parking Lot

President David Finney, Provost Robin Abramson, College vice presidents and Champlain faculty in full academic regalia will welcome new students to campus in the ceremony that officially begins your college career. The St. Andrew’s Pipe Band of Vermont will lead a formal processional followed by our school song. 
Champlain will also present its 2009 Distinguished Citizen Award and have a keynote speaker.


4:00 – 5:30pm     Residence Hall Community Meeting                                

Meet the members of your residence hall at this social gathering, including your Resident Assistant, Area Coordinator and/or Head Resident. Spinner Place Residents: your meeting will be held in the Hauke Conference Room on the main campus.

7:00 – 8:30pm     TRASHED                                Argosy Gymnasium

TRASHED is an inspirational stand-up comedy program based on the life lessons of Wendi Fox.  TRASHED is a combination of hysterical observations, profound questions and life lessons learned.  Come experience the “Beer Goggle Challenge” hear some wild stories, brain bending moments, and sobering laughs.  Also pick up your tickets to attend the Lake Champlain Cruise or Pizza Putt excursions. 

 

8:45 - 9:15pm     Class of 2013 heads out to have some fun!     Bader Parking Lot or McDonald Parking Lot

Buses will be available in the Bader parking lot at 8:45pm to take you to the waterfront for the cruise or in McDonald Parking Lot to take you to Pizza Putt. You must have a ticket to attend either of these events.    


9:30 – 11:30pm    Lake Champlain Boat Cruise                        Bader Parking Lot            

Students climb aboard the “Spirit of Ethan Allen III,” Burlington’s largest cruise ship.  The entire             boat, three decks in all, is reserved for the Class of 2013.  Food, soda, music and a friendly game of Bingo will be available on the boat. Come along for a wonderful evening on beautiful Lake Champlain. 

Buses will meet you directly after the cruise to drive you back to campus and Spinner Place.


9:30 – 11:30pm    Pizza Putt                                McDonald Parking Lot

Head out to a local pizza place that offers much more than just pizza!  You can play miniature golf, laser tag, video games, and more.  Snacks provided, so bring your appetite. 
Buses will meet you directly after the event to drive you back to campus and Spinner Place.

LEAD, is the third component of Champlain’s Education in Three Dimensions and focuses on learning that is not typically covered in the classroom. LEAD spans all four years of the Champlain College education, and gives students the needed tools for personal growth in four areas: career management, financial sophistication, community involvement and individual values.  Today, more than ever, having skills and tools that help to negotiate relationships, communities, careers, and financial issues are critical to one’s success in life.  During this time students will be introduced to LEAD and the first year expectations.

Grab your dinner and come out to the Student Life Center terrace.  This is a great opportunity to begin to consider your options and plan for a semester abroad during your junior year.  Lynda Reid, Director of Champlain Abroad Recruiting, along with Champlain students who have returned from abroad, will introduce you to your study abroad options and how to begin planning and preparing.  Interested in attending? The Featured Event Tonight is The Grind

Join your fellow students in the Dining Hall for the opening night of The Grind Coffee House.  This open mic coffee house encourages you to let loose and be creative.  You can sing, play music, read poetry, slam, stand-up, or just say what’s on your mind.  The Grind is a safe space to get together with friends, meet people and have a good time, no matter what your tastes or views. And to those of you who aren’t convinced yet: free food!  If you like what you see, you can also participate in the Grind each Wednesday night throughout the semester in the SLC Fireside Lounge.

All residential students are required to come learn the do's and don’ts of fire safety, preventing theft on campus, as well as policies involving alcohol, illegal substances and noise violations.  Wondering what to do with your car now that you're all moved in? Or just have general questions for the Office of Campus Public Safety?  Come check out the program on Public Safety!  Also, hear valuable personal safety tips.

Not sure where your Tuesday class is located?  Heard about the Student Life Office, but don’t know where it is? Want to check out the photography lab?  Bring your class schedule and an Orientation Leader can show you where to go for classes.  Come anytime between 12:30 and 2:30pm to learn the basics of the Champlain campus, as well as some of Champlain’s hidden features.

All programs of study require at least one math course. A small group of students will receive waivers (no credit given) for College Algebra or Algebra & Trigonometry due to a high level of math performance. All other students who are required to take College Algebra or Algebra & Trigonometry in any semester of their program should take the appropriate Challenge Exam during new-student Orientation.  Students who receive a grade of 70% or better on the Challenge Exam will receive a waiver (no credit given) for College Algebra or Algebra & Trigonometry.  These students are encouraged to schedule a higher level math course but are free to choose any qualifying elective.  This choice should be made in consultation with their advisor.   For more information or Challenge Exam review sheets, contact Scott Stevens at (802) 865-6448 or at  HYPERLINK "mailto:stevens@champlain.edu" stevens@champlain.edu.

Class of 2013 – take a hike!  Signups are required, so make sure to sign up in your first Orientation meeting on Friday or anytime on Saturday at the Information Table.  Meet at Bader Parking Lot and take a quick hike to see the beauty of your new surroundings.  Light hiking boots or sneakers, water and sunscreen recommended (rain date Saturday, September 5, same time and location).

Take a walking tour and explore downtown Burlington with your Orientation group!  Find where the hottest spots to hang out with friends are or the best places to get off campus and get some work done.  Wear comfy shoes and bring some money so you can grab a cup of coffee, an ice cream or whatever you‘d like, you can find it all on Church Street!

Check out the wide variety of fitness classes and equipment offered year ‘round in the Fitness Center!  Make sure to wear your workout gear because this won’t be your average information session!

Work-Study eligible students are invited to stop by the Hauke Conference Room to learn about on-campus positions offered by various departments at the College.  Come learn about these departments, speak with supervisors and apply for open positions.  Staff from the Financial Aid, Career Services and Payroll Offices will be on hand to answer questions and distribute authorization forms and enrollment paperwork.

Our community partners have needs in nearly anything you may be interested in: animal care, elder care, environmental sustainability, web design, marketing, IT support, childcare, tutoring, mentoring, music cataloguing, anti-poverty activities. Many of these opportunities could fulfill your Life Experience & Action Dimension (LEAD) community building requirement and will not only boost your knowledge base but will introduce you to some very dedicated people.

The Community Book Program presents the book Standing Up to the Madness: Ordinary Heroes in Extraordinary Times by Amy and David Goodman.  The bestselling book highlights such firebrands as Rosa Parks and the Montgomery Bus Boycott and the schoolchildren in Soweto, South Africa, who revolted against apartheid. The book concludes with a rousing chapter written with students in mind, titled "We are the Leaders We've Been Waiting For: How to Stand up to the Madness." The Community Book Program will culminate with a presentation and book signing by Amy and David Goodman.
