A bard with a social vision
As an avid writer throughout high school, Douglas Tetrault felt it was important to find a writing major that went above and beyond the norm. Champlain's professional writing fit the bill. "The writing program at Champlain is career focused," he says. "With this degree you're going to get training from the most creative to the most technical aspects of writing, and everything in between. And that's what makes it different from an English degree at some other university."
Douglas is strongly committed to public service, and has been working closely with the Center for Civic and Service Engagement for much of his time at Champlain College. His hard work gained the attention of Senator Patrick Leahy's office in Washington, who hired Douglas to work for a summer in the Senate Judiciary Committee.
He has shelved his initial dream of becoming a bestselling author by age 22, and has reassigned his goals accordingly. "I'd love to work in non-profit management, or work in nonprofit or political fields. This writing degree is a very large stepping stone to the ultimate goal of where I'm trying to go."
