This major offers you an amazing opportunity to tailor a program to your interests or discover new interests through a wide variety of courses. As a Communication major at Champlain, you start with a strong grounding in such areas as communication theory, media production, human communication, public speaking and visual communication, as well as foundations in marketing, advertising and media writing. Then, working closely with a faculty advisor to create a logical framework for a well-rounded program, you can take courses in any of the other majors in the Division of Communication & Creative Media, or even in other Academic Divisions.

Multiple internship opportunities help you explore and put the finishing touches on an integrated set of skills that will help you launch a successful career. The fastest-growing major at Champlain, Communication boasts graduates who are carving out unique professional territory in areas such as nonprofit communications, mediation, negotiation, human resources, public relations, advertising, public service, television, broadcasting and radio. This is also a great program if you are considering going straight to graduate school.

  • Take advantage of the flexible curriculum, small classroom settings and individual teacher attention that allow you to explore areas of personal interest, from public relations, marketing communications, and audio and video production to interpersonal communication, conflict management and public speaking.
  • Focus on practical workplace applications and learn by doing through multiple internships and hands-on projects created for a wide variety of real-world clients that prepare you to be an accomplished and effective communicator for the rest of your life.
  • Acquire invaluable production oriented skills like scripting, video shooting and advanced editing. Tailor your degree with a specialization in Sonic Arts that will allow you to integrate music, audio production and sound design into your program. Courses include Synthesis & Sound Design and Advanced Projects in Sonic Arts.
  • Jump start your profesional life with internships in radio, television, public relations, advertising, Web production or other 21st-century communication arenas to which you’re drawn.
  • Enhance your portfolio. Your senior Communication capstone project will allow you to tie your career-centered Champlain education to your internship to create a distinctive reflection of your knowledge, experience and talent.
  • Gain global perspective by taking a semester abroad. The curriculum has been designed to enable you to study for a semester abroad at a Champlain campus in either Montreal, Canada, or Dublin, Ireland, or anywhere in the world through our study abroad partners.
