Fall 2008 Orientation

During Champlain College's First Year Student Orientation, students are given the opportunity to meet with their entire Division. Every year at the this time the members of the Education andLaurel Bongiorno and Students at the Food Shelf Human Studies Division walk down to City Hall Park which is located next door to the pedestrian portion of Church Street. While there, the students attend the weekly Farmer's Market. Students break into groups where they are given twenty dollars to use to purchase as many items as possible. The students then take their purcheses to the Chittenden Emergency Food Shelf and donate the items from the Farmer's Market. This activity builds a sense of community within their division as well as within Burlington. It helps acclimate them with the issues of homelessness and poverty.

This year's class donated 338 pounds of fresh produce and still had $63 dollars to add to their donation!
