Internships
The internship, an integral part of the Professional Writing degree, is a chance to work with one foot in the post-college world. Everybody does at least one internship.
In some cases you'll choose to work with one of our existing internship partners (see list below).
In other cases, though, you'll say "This is the kind of writing I want to do. This is the kind of person/organization/company I wish I could work with. Can you arrange an internship for me?" We love it when that happens: not only do we broaden our range of contacts and stay up to date, but it's a sign that you're on the way to discovering who you are, and where you want your path to take you.
Some of the places that Professional Writing students have interned include:
- Conde Nast magazines
- Eating Well Magazine
- The Vermont International Film Festival
- The Burlington Free Press
- Seven Days
- Burton Snowboards
- State of Mind Magazine
- The Colchester Sun
- Big Heavy World
- Burlington Book Festival
- Eagle Country Radio
- Vermont Public Television
- Teen Voices, Boston
- Free Tibet, NYC
- Champlain College Theatre
- Burlington City Arts

"I did my internship at The Champlain Current. It was a great opportunity because I was able to really use what I learned right away. I was able to work with some great editors and learned a lot more than just writing. I became involved in the editing, marketing of the paper and the business side of it. I was able to find out what my strengths and weaknesses were, and I was allowed to succeed and fail in a supportive environment. It worked out quite well because I continued working for the paper, and upon graduation, I was offered a paid position."
