November 13, 2013
Earlier this week, we provided you with an update regarding the presidential search process, asking you to set aside four sets of dates for final candidates to interview on-campus with the larger Champlain College community. Today, we have announced to the campus, via email, the names of the four final presidential candidates.
All employees received a copy of each candidate’s campus meeting schedule and their CV. We strongly encourage you to review these materials and take advantage of the opportunity to meet each candidate. Your impressions of each candidate will be important feedback for the Search Committee to consider as we deliberate following all of the campus visits. We will email you a link to an on-line survey following each of the candidates’ visits, as a way for you to share your observations with the Search Committee.
Following the visits and our review of all feedback and referencing completed on the candidates, the Search Committee will present our recommendations to the full Board of Trustees.
As noted in the update sent earlier this week, the Search Committee and the team at Storbeck/Pimentel & Associates are currently conducting reference checks on each of the four candidates. We have been cautioned that it would be inappropriate for anyone other than the search firm to initiate formal or informal contacts with candidates’ associates or friends at their universities, or at places of previous employment. We respectfully request that other campus members refrain from making additional inquiries, as doing so may result in candidates withdrawing from the search process. If, however, you do have suggested contacts, feel free to share those with Katie Hawley, and she will share those with us.
Also, please keep in mind that we are not the only ones doing the evaluating during this phase of the search process. Each candidate (and in some cases the candidate’s significant other) will be carefully evaluating Champlain College. We encourage you to be transparent and candid, while treating each candidate with courtesy and respect. By doing so, we hope to provide candidates with an accurate picture of the opportunities here at Champlain, while reinforcing the Champlain and Vermont values that the candidates will seek to validate during their on-campus meetings.
As always, should you have questions regarding the search process please feel free to contact me, Chuck Bunting or Katie Hawley. In the meantime, on behalf of the Search Committee, we look forward to hearing your impressions of each of the candidates and are excited to see them on campus beginning next week!
November 11, 2013 Update sent to All Faculty & Staff
It is my great pleasure to provide you with this update regarding the presidential search process. Now that we have reached November, the search process has accelerated. As we enter this more intensive stage, we will need your involvement and feedback.
As you'll recall from our early October update, the Presidential Search Committee reviewed a large and deeply talented pool of candidates presented to us by Storbeck/Pimentel & Associates. After reviewing the candidates' materials, the Committee spent three days conducting face-to-face interviews with the first round of candidates.
Based on the results of the off-campus interviews, we are pleased to let you know that the Search Committee has selected an exciting group of finalists. We look forward to sharing their names and credentials with you shortly, but wanted to let you know immediately the dates being held for campus visits. Specifically, we have set aside four sets of two days for final interviews: November 18-19, November 21-22, December 2-3, and December 5-6. You'll note that each set of dates is at the start or end of a work week. This was an intentional choice to encourage and support candidates spending additional time in the Burlington community.
As soon as we have finalized the remaining details we will provide you with candidate names, resumes and interview schedules. We urge you to take advantage of the opportunity to meet and evaluate each candidate and then to share your observations with the Search Committee, using the forthcoming on-line Presidential Search survey.
Before the candidate visits begin, we thought it would be important to pass along a strong recommendation from Storbeck/Pimentel & Associates regarding how to assure successful campus visits. Specifically, our search partners reminded us that, during these visits, we are not the only ones doing the evaluating. Each candidate (and in some cases the candidate's significant other) will be carefully evaluating Champlain College -- its people, its culture, its challenges and its potential. We encourage you to be transparent and candid, while treating each candidate professionally with courtesy and respect. By doing so, we hope to reinforce the Champlain and Vermont values that the candidates will seek to validate during their on-campus meetings.
As soon as details are finalized, we will be sending you an e-mail with summaries of each candidate's campus interview schedule, professional experience and education. After you meet with each finalist, please take the time to give us your feedback via the online survey, because that will become an important part of our evaluation process.
On behalf of the Search Committee, thank you for taking the time to read our updates. We remain committed to communicating news about our progress as quickly and as completely as possible, and we look forward to hearing your impressions following the on-campus candidate visits.
As always, please feel free to contact me, Chuck Bunting or Katie Hawley should have questions or information to share regarding the search process.
October 9, 3013, Update sent to All Faculty and Staff
On behalf of the Presidential Search Committee, I am pleased to provide you with an update regarding the process of choosing Champlain's next President. When I last updated the community, in mid-August, the Search Committee had just started to receive applications well in advance of the September 27th application deadline.
At this time, I am very pleased to let you know that the candidate pool is strong in number and, more importantly, deeply talented. It becomes increasingly apparent that Champlain is charting a course that is unique within the higher education community and is garnering the respect of leaders throughout the country and beyond. Our clearly defined mission, commitment to student learning, and entrepreneurial spirit have attracted a broad and skilled group of applicants.
The Search Committee spent much of September reading applicants' cover letters and reviewing their extensive materials. It was an important task and one the Committee members took on with great diligence.
Last week, the Search Committee met and selected a sizeable group of candidates to invite for a first round of interviews. Storbeck/Pimentel & Associates subsequently extended invitations to each of the selected candidates and all have enthusiastically affirmed their interest to continue forward in the search process.
Search Committee members will be conducting these "airport interviews" later this month and into early November. This is an important time in the search process, when confidentiality is critical for each candidate and for a successful process overall. Therefore, I ask for your continued patience as we move through this next phase of the process.
We are still on track with our original timeline and anticipate conducting final candidate interviews in late November and early December. It will be at this point in the process where we, once again, will be seeking your input and perspectives.
If you have any questions regarding the search process, feel free to contact me, Chuck Bunting or Katie Hawley. I look forward to providing you with another update shortly.
August 14, 2013, Update sent to All Faculty and Staff
On behalf of the Search Committee, I am pleased to provide you with an update regarding the process of choosing Champlain's next President. When I last updated the community, in mid-June, the Search Committee had just completed the Presidential Profile and our search consultants were poised to begin identifying and recruiting candidates through networking, database reviews and general outreach.
I am pleased to report that as of last week we have received a strong number of full applications, with six weeks still remaining prior to the September 27th application deadline. Chuck Bunting, Consulting Partner at Storbeck/Pimentel & Associates, continues to communicate with a number of additional individuals who have conveyed interest and are considering becoming formal applicants.
Perhaps more encouraging than the impressive number of formal submissions already received is the extent of positive comments about Champlain and the search profile. It seems that many folks hold a positive image of the College, its mission, programs and process; and the profile is serving to reinforce and help affirm that image.
On a more personal note, a good deal of my time this summer has been spent in the College search process with my high-school age son. Through this process I have gained more perspective on the search process and how colleges are differentiating themselves from one another. It is clear to me that Champlain continues to have a deeply relevant message that not only serves our students and families well, but a message that will also attract a wide-range of skilled leaders.
Later this month the Search Committee will meet with the consulting team for a more formal update on recruiting and to plan out the next steps of the process. As the Presidential Search Committee Chair, I remain committed to a search process that is as open and transparent as possible, while also maintaining the confidentiality that is essential for a successful search process.
If you have any questions regarding the search process, feel free to contact me, Chuck Bunting or Katie Hawley. If you would like to nominate a potential candidate, please provide your information to any member of the Search Committee or to Chuck Bunting directly at firstname.lastname@example.org
I look forward to providing you with another update once the fall semester is fully underway.
June, 12, 2013, Update sent to All Faculty and Staff
On behalf of the Search Committee, I am pleased to keep you up-to-date on the Committee's process of choosing Champlain's next president. Since I last updated the campus at the Town Hall meeting in April, our search partner, Storbeck/Pimentel & Associates, and the firm's lead consultant Chuck Bunting, accompanied by Search Committee team members, met with more than 150 individuals in nearly 30 focus meetings to gather feedback and ideas on priorities and qualifications. Additionally, we have received feedback from over 100 individuals via Survey Monkey, and many of you personally reached out to me and other search committee members to provide valued feedback. Your insights and comments have been sincere, thoughtful and helpful. Thank you!
Our collective feedback serves as a basis for assessing Champlain's strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and challenges and is the foundation of the institutional and position profile. The Profile is used as a core background document to help tell the Champlain story and to help attract interested presidential candidates.
After much review and many drafts, we are delighted to present the Search Committee's approved Profile. Click here to view the profile.
We believe we have captured the uniqueness and excitement of Champlain. We have highlighted our successful history, articulated a clear commitment to Champlain 2020 and hope to have inspired a visionary leader who will look well beyond 2020.
So, with this initial phase of the search completed, the next recruiting steps are as follows:
The last item I want to update you on is the Search Committee itself. Specifically, we engaged in a number of conversations regarding the right number of committee members and appropriate representation. This is a difficult issue and one I am confident we can manage together.
We have and will continue to make the search process as open and transparent as possible while also maintaining the confidentiality that is essential for a successful search process and that is deserved by the candidates. We will maintain the original members in keeping with Champlain's current governance structure by representation but will look to design a campus interview process for finalist candidates that will be inclusive and extensive.
We believe that by more than doubling the number of interviews and stakeholders involved in the scoping process during the last 45 days, expanding the interview sessions with the final candidates, and maintaining an open dialogue throughout the search process, we can conduct a highly effective search.
We appreciate everyone's views on this topic and ask for your trust and continued passion for participating in this important process to identify and hire a new leader to keep Champlain distinctive and a leader in higher education.
If you have any questions on the search process, please feel to contact me, Chuck Bunting or Katie Hawley. If you know of a referral source for candidates, or if you would like to nominate a potential candidate, please provide your information to any member of the Search Committee or to Chuck Bunting directly, at email@example.com.
I look forward to updating you on a monthly basis.
