It's almost time for the 6th Annual Elevator Pitch Competition. The contest allows participating students to give their 90-second "pitch" to an executive (dubbed the "suit") as they ride together in a fictional elevator. There are three categories of competition-entrepreneurs, job/internship seekers, and non-profit/social advocates. The event is patterned on a national competition which teaches budding entrepreneurs the importance of presenting a "big idea" to an executive as succinctly and convincingly as possible. In a true example of community-in-action, E-Pitch is collaboration among Champlain College's BYOBiz Program, Career Services, the Center for Service & Civic Engagement, the Office of Advancement, and LEAD.
This year's event will take place on stage at Champlain's Alumni Auditorium on Tuesday, February 26th, with alum Tim Kavanagh as emcee. The event is open to all students (all years/all majors). The deadline to enter the competition is Friday, February 1st. Participants must complete an entry form available at www.champlain.edu/byobiz/elevator-pitch-competition.
To help students prepare for the competition, there will be opportunities for one-on-one or group sessions with Eric Ronis and his dynamic team of student "coaches" at the Oral Communication Lab. Additional support and coaching is available from Bob Bloch, Director of the BYOBiz Program; Kyle Dodson, Director of the Center for Service & Civic Engagement; members of the Career Services team; as well as some faculty and alumni volunteers. There will also be several interactive improv-style workshops to help students get comfortable with public speaking. Students can earn LEAD Life-long Career Management Credit for participating in the Elevator Pitch.
In addition to developing a valuable life skill, winners in each category can walk away with cash prizes of $500 (1st place), $300 (2nd place) and $100 (3rd place) provided by the Elevator Pitch's generous sponsor KeyBank. Students will also have the opportunity to network with the panel of celebrity judges-trustees and community leaders.
