Champlain Theatre Announces 2014-15 Season

The Champlain College Theatre Company has announced its 2014-15 schedule that will include Seeds, Radio Champlain: It's a Wonderful Life, the annual performance of The Vagina Monologues, and will close its season with Pantomime! Time Flies: A Cinderella Tale. All Champlain Theatre performances are open to the public.

The first production of the season, Annabel Soutar's Seeds, opens Sept. 24 at 7:30 p.m. at Flynn Space, 147 Main St. Performances run though Sept. 26.

The performance will be an informal staged reading of Annabel Soutar's suspenseful documentary play about the 2004 Supreme Court of Canada showdown between Saskatchewan farmer Percy Schmeiser and the biotech multinational Monsanto Inc. Monsanto accused Schmeiser of growing its genetically patented Round-up Ready canola seeds on his property without paying the licensing fee.

Not merely a courtroom drama, the play presents a David and Goliath struggle that poses central questions: What is life and what does it mean for humans to modify it? Who owns life and what does it mean for Monsanto to patent genes, in essence, the very building blocks of life? The performance is free admission and open to the public.
