A lifelong Vermonter, I earned my Bachelor of Arts in English with Honors from Middlebury College and my Master of Arts in English from the University of Vermont. At UVM, I got a taste of teaching college students through a two-year teaching fellowship.
Here at Champlain, I have taught many courses-from interpersonal communication and public speaking to literature and writing. For several years, I directed the Champlain Writing Center and served as co-chair of the College's very successful Community Book Program. I taught rhetoric courses in the first year of Champlain's unique Core Curriculum.
My professional interests include helping students to read more actively and working with colleagues to improve instruction in writing. I have served both as vice president and as secretary of the Faculty Senate. Individually and with colleagues, I have presented half a dozen workshops at regional and national conferences.
I live in Essex but spend most weekends in Garfield, Vermont, a family meeting place. I enjoy reading, walking, gardening, snow shoeing, skiing, and visiting with our two daughters and their families, including two grandsons (four and seven years old) who live with their parents in northern New Mexico, near Taos. Our younger daughter and her husband live in Salem, Massachusetts.
