I see myself as central to the lives of my students for the four years that they are here. My job is to guide them, facilitate them and open their eyes to possibilities that they never knew existed before they came here. I'm also a touch point throughout their careers. Many of my graduates stay in touch regularly seeking advice, the move from being my students to being my colleagues in the industry.
That's one of the ways I stay plugged in to the industries. My ultimate passion is seeing students be successful in their chosen fields—whether it's public relations, broadcast or other areas of the communication industry. I love helping them to find and explore their areas of interest and aptitude, and give them the skills, experience and insight to become what they want to be.
I have a tremendous opportunity at Champlain —because the institution is so nimble and believes in offering nothing but the most up-to-date curriculum and is willing to change so quickly—to be very involved in the industries to keep our programs on the cutting edge. In my time at Champlain, the department had no internships, I now have over 100 internships for students from which to choose and growing every day. People tell me that they would rather have the Champlain interns because they possess the specific knowledge that they need and don't need as much training as other college students.
I see myself as being a role model for my students not only because of my professional behavior but because I'm someone who has worked in a business environment. I'm happy to share that leadership. It's always my goal to model professional behavior for my students—it's a source of inspiration for the students. In my capstone class, I work very, very hard to instill industry specific professional behavior and ethics. My students walk out of here with much more savvy and professional attitude than their counterparts. My other passion is keeping the three majors that I oversee current, cutting-edge. I work hard to do that every year to make sure that they are cutting edge. For those students who want to participate in a great education, I'm their cheerleader.
The passion that I have for my students includes being able to bring to life industry expertise into the classroom, not only using real life examples, but getting the students to work directly with clients on real projects. Being able to introduce my students to professionally focused. As with most of Champlain's faculty members, I bring a wealth of industry experience to my classroom setting. I spent 13 years as the division chair of Communication and the Arts at Dean College and seven years on the Communications department faculty at SUNY Plattsburgh. After seven years on-air and as a news director in radio, I worked at several local television stations, directing and producing shows for local and national release. Several of my documentaries have aired on PBS and cable. My credentials also include working in public relations for, among others, the Lake Placid Chamber of Commerce and the I Love New York campaign.
