John Sonnick originates from New York City.  He received his BA from Iona College in New Rochelle, New York in 1969 and MS in Secondary Education in 1973 from Stuyvesant College.

He came to Vermont in 1976 where he joined the Burlington Police Department.  During the next twenty-five years Mr. Sonnick worked in the Uniform, Detective and Administrative Bureaus at BPD.  During this time he also taught at the Vermont Police Academy.

After he retired in 2001, Mr. Sonnick began teaching as an adjunct professor of criminal studies at Champlain, as well as, consultant to the Vermont Police Academy.  During his tenure at Champlain Mr. Sonnick has taught Police Operations, Criminal Procedure, Juvenile Justice and Criminal Investigation.  He is also responsible for working with students pursuing internships with various criminal justice agencies in the Chittenden County area.
