Follow the steps outlined below to plan your study abroad experience.
PLAN
- Begin your planning by contacting the Director of Champlain Abroad Recruiting, Dr. Lynda Reid at reid@champlain.edu.
- Attend a Champlain Abroad workshop. You will learn how to plan, prepare, and apply for a semester abroad. Details on deadlines, eligibility requirements, approved programs and the application process will be provided. Check the Office of International Programs website for regularly scheduled information sessions.
- Research your Study Abroad options: Champlain Abroad Programs are very straight-forward since the classes offered are Champlain courses and credits.
PREPARE
- Meet with your Faculty Advisor. Discuss your study abroad plans with your faculty advisor as early as possible. Your faculty advisor can help you determine the optimal time for you to go abroad as well as advise you on course selections.
- Apply for a U.S. Passport. This can take time, so it is best to get a head start on it. Visit the U.S. Department of State’s website for more details.
- Contact Dr. Lynda Reid at reid@champlain.edu to arrange a meeting and to get the Champlain Abroad Application Package.
APPLY
Space is limited in all programs – apply early to increase your chances of acceptance. For approval to a Champlain Abroad Program submit your completed Champlain Abroad Application Package (application, two faculty recommendations, unofficial transcript, current program evaluation, list of course preferences with alternate) to the Director of Champlain Abroad Recruiting by the deadline. March 15 for fall, academic year, and summer; October 15 for spring.
APPROVAL
- Once you are approved by Champlain to study abroad, you will be contacted by the Office of International Programs. You will be responsible for monitoring application deadlines, soliciting faculty recommendations and payments.
- All study abroad students may need to apply for a country-specific visa. Follow the recommendations from your program sponsor about applying for a visa, and making your travel arrangements. You may also visit the U.S. Department of State's foreign entry page for more info.
- All study abroad students must complete all forms and waivers. You will be sent all necessary Champlain forms and waivers from the Office of International Programs. Sign and return them to the appropriate Champlain offices.
- All Study Abroad students must attend a pre-departure orientation. Mandatory orientation sessions are held at the end of the semester before you go abroad. You will be notified of the date, time and location of this meeting.
RETURN
Upon your return, complete a Program Evaluation Form and attend a re-entry gathering.
