Portfolio Submission for Professional Writing Major Applicants

WRITING WITH PURPOSE

Champlain College's Professional Writing Program takes its writers and their real-world ambitions seriously. To consider you for the program, we need to see three to five pieces of writing, whether formal or creative, written for a class or in your own time, that show at least some of the following qualities: very strong basic written English skills, imagination, a willingness to take risks, an attention to detail, the ability to observe, the ability to reflect, and an eye and an ear for language.

We're not necessarily looking for a piece of writing that earned you a good grade when you turned it in; we're looking for writing that shows you have a curious, passionate, alert, committed mind.  Common sense and clear conversational prose are just as valuable as flights of fancy and elaborate language. Just as importantly, we're looking for an eagerness to engage - to engage in the world and to engage in writing.

Portfolio Challenge: submit three to five (3-5) pieces of writing in the genre that comes most naturally to you and in which you can say what YOU have to say -- fiction, poetry, screenplay, essay, stage play, journalism, memoir. Your submission does not have any word count limitations or expectations.

HOW THE PORTFOLIO WILL BE EVALUATED:

Faculty members of Champlain College's Professional Writing program will evaluate the submissions as if they were evaluating current student work. Students should not hesitate to take risks with their submission. Clarity, directness, and engagement are important criteria of the evaluation process.
