Why Minor in a Foreign Language?

Proficiency in foreign languages and world cultures are crucial assets in a world that is increasingly interdependent and interconnected by global media and markets. Graduates with foreign language skills and international understanding are better prepared to participate and succeed in the global marketplace. The Foreign Languages minor at Champlain will help you become a more globally engaged and cross-culturally aware citizen.

  • Gain proficiency in at least two languages
  • Improve your cognitive abilities as you develop the writing, speaking and listening skills needed to be globally engaged
  • Gain greater awareness and understanding of different cultural values, priorities and concerns
  • Learn to apply cross-cultural awareness in social and professional settings

*You are also given free access to online language aids, such as Mango Languages and PowerspeaK12.

Courses in this minor currently include:

Students must complete :

  • four levels of a primary language
  • two levels of a secondary language

Currently, students are given the opportunity to learn French, Spanish, Japanese, Chinese and Arabic at Champlain. Students are also given the opportunity to explore German and Italian at the neighboring school, St. Michael's College in Colchester, Vermont.
