Q. What are the residence halls like, and how do I choose one?
A. All first year students are housed in one of the stunning, completely restored Victorian-era mansion residence halls that ring the central campus. Everywhere you want to be is close at hand (including beautiful downtown Burlington), and each is fully loaded with all the amenities, including wireless internet access and laundry facilities.
Q: When will I find out my housing assignment?
A: You'll usually receive your housing assignment in mid to late August. It is a good idea to contact your roommate before the start of school to discuss items you plan on bringing to avoid duplication. Connect with your roommate, and find out who else will be in your dorm, through Champlain's Facebook app. Click on the "Admitted Yearbook" and then "Residence Hall" tab (once you are on the Wall, feel free to "Start a New Topic" and ask any questions you have); you might want to check back frequently.
Q: When may I move in?
A: Residence halls officially open to new students who are attending Orientation on Friday, August 26. Check-in begins at 8:00 a.m., and Residential Life staff will welcome you at your residence hall. Please finish moving in by 1:00 p.m. so you may begin Orientation.
When you arrive, go directly to your residence hall and get your things settled in your room. If you notice anything amiss in your room, notify a Residential Life staff member immediately. Our staff will make every effort to ensure that you are as comfortable as possible. Then go to the Orientation tent in the Hauke Courtyard to pick up your Orientation materials.
Due to the limited parking on campus, we will provide unloading assistance, and then you will be asked to move your car to a satellite parking lot. The driver of the car will have shuttle transportation back to campus. International students should contact the International Student Advisor for Orientation and residence hall move-in dates.
Q: What do I need for my room?
A: Each room is furnished with a bed, a desk, a chair, a bureau and closet space for each resident. You supply your own linens, including a pillow and a mattress pad to fit a 36 x 80 (extra long) mattress. All rooms are equipped with overhead lights, although most students prefer a study lamp (no halogen lights, please). Wastebaskets are provided in bathrooms but not in individual rooms. Q: Is my personal property secure in my room?
A: Few students experience theft on our campus. However, because the possibility exists, you should consider leaving extremely valuable items at home. We strongly recommend that students carry insurance for their personal belongings. Often this insurance is part of the family's homeowner's policy. Champlain College is not responsible for student property.
Q: What is the guest policy in residence halls?
A: Guests are welcome in residence halls Sunday-Thursday 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m. and Friday-Saturday 9:00 a.m.-midnight. Please keep in mind that all guests must be visiting a particular person in the residence hall, and the person hosting the guest is responsible for the guest at all times. Guests may stay overnight with agreement from other room occupants. However, students and guests must sleep in a room, not a lounge. Guests may stay for no more than two nights.
Q: Who oversees my residence hall?
A: Area Coordinators for your area and Resident Assistants in your residence hall are always the first points of contact. They can usually help you quickly with any concerns you have.
The major responsibilities of the Residential Life staff are to oversee the day-to-day operation of the buildings, develop personal relationships with each resident, and help students become part of the College community. All Residential Life staff members know about college resources and can make appropriate referrals for students when necessary. In addition, Residential Life staff members are responsible for clarifying and implementing the residential rules and regulations of the College as published in the College Catalog. Families and students are encouraged to contact Residential Life staff members whenever they have a concern.
Q: If I am living on campus, can I bring a car?
A:Champlain College is located in a residential neighborhood in Burlington, so parking on campus and surrounding streets is extremely limited. In an effort to make the most efficient use of our parking spaces and to maintain the good relations we enjoy with our neighbors, Champlain has developed a strict campus parking policy that applies to everyone-students, faculty, staff and visitors.
Commuting Students: All vehicles parked in on-street parking spaces and in lots owned or operated by Champlain College must have a valid parking permit, properly displayed, for the lot or area in question. Permits are issued by zone, and only those vehicles with a valid permit for a particular zone may park in a lot in that zone.
Residential students may not have cars on campus or park in campus lots except in special circumstances. Those who require a car may request a permit at no charge to park in an off-campus lot served by a shuttle. Keep in mind that in Burlington, everything you need is within walking distance, including theaters, movies, art galleries, clothing stores, shopping malls, coffee houses, banks, restaurants, grocery stores and pharmacies. Getting to and from home for the holidays is easy: Champlain College is a 10-minute drive from the Burlington International Airport, and the Greyhound bus station is just down the hill from campus. There is an Amtrak station in nearby Essex Junction. In addition, it's a good bet that there are other college students who live close to your hometown and would give you a ride.
Q: How will I receive mail?
A: Emails will be sent to students' mymail account when letters and packages have arrived. Visit the mailroom page for specifics.
Q: If I like to snowboard or ski, where is the closest mountain and how can I get there?
A: Champlain College offers a shuttle to Bolton Valley, about 20 minutes away, during the week in the evenings. Occasionally on the weekends, a free shuttle bus takes students to Stowe and Sugarbush, about an hour's drive from campus. Other ski areas within driving distance are Jay Peak, Burke, Killington and Mad River Valley. For more information about the ski mountains in Vermont, click here.
Q: Does Champlain College accept Advanced Placement (AP) credits or college credits from other institutions?
A: Yes, if a student earns a 4 or better on an AP exam, Champlain will award three credits for each exam. If a student earns a "C" or better at another institution, credit will be awarded. Champlain must receive notification of the AP score or the final transcript from the college (you must request that they send it to us) in order to grant the credits.

Q: When do I choose my schedule? Am I guaranteed to get the classes I need?
A: In your first semester, you are automatically assigned a schedule, which guarantees you the classes you need. To plan your subsequent semesters you will meet with your academic advisor to select your classes. You will be mailed more information about your schedule near the end of the summer.
Q: What kinds of academic support are available?
A: Champlain College provides its students with many opportunities to learn how to get the most out of their valuable college education and build skills for a successful future. In addition to academic support services which include peer-tutoring through its campus labs and 24/7 online tutoring through Smarthinking, Champlain also offers each student the opportunity to work with an academic coach to build your academic skills, such as goal-setting, organizational strategies, reading strategies, note-taking, study strategies, time management and test-taking. Q: When and where can I purchase my books?
A: Once you have your final schedule, you may order your textbooks for fall courses and have them ready at the bookstore when you arrive on campus, or you can have them shipped to your home. Note that we do not ship to dorm rooms, the campus mailroom or any other on-campus location.
With your course schedule in hand, visit the bookstore's website at champlainbookstore.com. Click on the "Books" tab, then continue through the directions to the "Search by Course." Once you select your term, department, course number and section, you'll be able to view all required books. Make sure your section numbers match your schedule, or you may get the wrong books. You'll have the option to buy or rent books new or used based on availability.
When purchasing online, you can choose free shipping or to pick-up your books when you get to campus. If you choose in-store pickup, you just need to bring your Champlain College CC ID card to the bookstore.
If you choose to order your books when you get to campus after the semester starts, the staff at the Bookstore will help you out. If we're sold out of stock for a book you need, they'll put in a special order and pay for the shipping. Talk to a team member if you need help.
The bookstore has almost all books available for renting. To rent a book, you need to bring a credit or debit card, along with a valid ID (driver's license, passport or state ID card). Students need to make sure that the book is returned to the bookstore by the last day of finals for each semester. If a rental is not returned at the end of the semester, you will be charged the difference between the rental cost and purchase price.
All options can be purchased in the store or online. Our return policy is that all books, with a receipt and resalable condition, can be returned within seven days after the start of the semester. If a student adds/drops a course, students can exchange or return books within 30 days as long as they show valid paperwork.
In collaboration with our partner, eFollett, we guarantee our Best Price Promise. When buying or renting textbooks, if you find a book somewhere else locally or online for less, we'll beat that price by 10%*. To get our Best Price Promise, you must show proof of the competitor's price. Refunds for prior purchases must be transacted within 14 business days of the original transaction, and sales tax could affect the final sale price of an item. Students who choose to study abroad, contact the bookstore about any questions you have about obtaining books and the best price promise.
Champlain's Bookstore will buy back books at any time during the semester.
Q: How can I find out information about computer requirements?
A: Although Champlain has public workstations and computer labs available across campus, most students do arrive at Champlain with their own computer to take advantage of Champlain's extensive WiFi network and gigabit Internet service. The Champlain College Support Services team, aka Champ Support, will be available during Orientation weekend on Friday, August 26 and Saturday, August 27 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the IDX Student Life Center atrium to help you configure your computer to our network and answer any computer-related questions you may have.

Q: If I am interested in studying abroad, what should I do?
A: There is no better time than when you're in college to spend a semester or a year in a foreign country and earn college credit. The key to studying abroad is meeting with an advisor early on to let him or her know your intentions. That way, he or she can help you plan your schedule to incorporate a study abroad semester into your four-year plan. For more on studying abroad and to learn about our existing programs, click here.

Q: Am I eligible for a scholarship?
A: All students accepted into a Champlain bachelor's degree program are automatically considered for one of Champlain's merit-based scholarships. These scholarships focus on students who exemplify excellence in academics and engagement outside the classroom.
All accepted students who complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) will be considered for Champlain's need-based scholarships. These scholarships are awarded to students with demonstrated financial need to allow the College to enroll the brightest, most diverse students regardless of family income.

Q: When is my deposit due?
A: If you've decided that Champlain is your first choice, simply submit a secure online payment for your Tuition and Housing deposit, and you are officially a Champlain College student. Please make sure you get your payment in by the deadline below.
Q: When is my tuition due?

Q: Do I have to purchase health insurance? Where do I go if I get sick?
A: Champlain College offers a health insurance plan for students who do not have outside insurance. Find more information on our optional Full-Time Student Health & Accident Insurance options. We have an on-campus health services office that is staffed by a nurse and a physician, who have regular clinic hours.

Q: What is the food on campus like?
A: Our Dining Hall has it all—amazing views of Lake Champlain and the Adirondack Mountains, seven food stations, meals cooked to order, and much more. Sodexo chefs are trained to accommodate a variety of palates. They offer gluten-free, non-dairy and other allergy-free products every day. Q: Can you talk a bit about campus safety?
A: Campus security is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week. All residence halls are locked; only residents have access cards. Burlington, Vermont in general is a very safe town. The same is true of our campus, but we encourage people to be smart. All residence halls are hard-wired to the Burlington Fire Department, which is two minutes from campus. Q: What kinds of activities can I pursue at Champlain?
A: Some of the best parts of college life are discovering new opportunities, meeting people and going to new places. The IDX Student Life Center is the main hub of activity on campus. You'll find a big-screen television, plenty of comfortable chairs, WiFi throughout the building, computers and games. The center also houses the Argosy Gymnasium and Fitness Center.
Numerous clubs and organizations on campus are active throughout the school year, offering ways to meet people with similar interests and students from around the world. From photography to dance, hockey to music, opportunities abound. Most clubs are started by student leaders who want to see fun and rewarding events happening on and off campus. We encourage you to get involved!
If you are interested in helping to plan events and activities, put your ideas into action. Get involved with the Student Government Association or CHAMP (Champlain Has Activities and Motivational Programming). These groups meet regularly to plan and implement many of the great activities that the College sponsors.
The Stall Street Journal is posted throughout campus each week to let you know what's happening. You will also find new listings online each week. We encourage you to attend the annual Activities Fair and barbecue in the second week of classes to meet program advisors and learn about things to do. And at the Service Fair, you can meet many community leaders looking for volunteers.
Q: How can I get involved in community service?
A: College isn't just where you earn a degree—it's also where you practice how to be a responsible, active citizen. Champlain's Center for Service & Civic Engagement (CSCE) helps you develop these skills while taking your passions and putting them to good use as a citizen of Burlington and the greater global community. Students involved in the CSCE's programs have a variety of interests-some have never done community service before, while others have been doing it for many years. They all share a desire to have fun and work together to make a difference.
Q: Where can I work out?
A: The Wellness & Fitness Center has a full range of weights, cycling and other cardiovascular equipment, and a multi-purpose space for dance, group classes-Pilates, Zumba, kickboxing, yoga-and strength-building exercise. The Argosy Gymnasium is available for basketball, soccer, volleyball and other intramural and recreational activities.
