RESIDENTIAL STUDENT MOVE-IN AND CHECK-IN

Meet at Your Residence Hall
When you arrive on campus, head directly to your residence hall. There a team of students will assist you in emptying your car and getting your belongings to your room. Families will be given directions to our Lakeside and Gilbane Parking lots where you can leave your car. Our shuttle service will quickly bring you back to campus for you to begin to settle into your room. All residence halls open at 8:00 a.m., at which time you can meet your Residential Life Staff and get acquainted with your new neighbors. At your residence hall you can also check in with the Orientation staff and pick up your Orientation packet. In this packet you will find the Orientation schedule for the weekend as well as other valuable information to ensure your success at Champlain.

COMMUTER STUDENT CHECK IN

Stop by Hauke Courtyard to receive your Orientation packet. This is also a good time to pick up your photo ID, drop off outstanding health forms, pick up books, learn about Work Study opportunities, and sign up for any needed bank accounts. Bring your laptop to get your internet account set up and learn how to access the Champlain network. Ski Pass sign-up will also be available.

NUTS AND BOLTS TO BEGINNING YOUR COLLEGE CAREER

Once you have settled into your residence hall and received your Orientation Packet there are still many loose ends to be tied up. There are resources all around campus ready to assist you in completing these tasks.

Your ID will be in the Fireside Lounge (FSL) for you to pick up at anytime this morning. If you didn't have a chance to send us your ID photo you can still have your picture taken and pick up your ID this evening back in the FSL.

Put Money on Your Cash Card

Forms will be available in the FSL to assist you in adding money to your ID card.

Emergency Alert System

All students are required to register for the campus emergency alert system. Make sure to stop by to meet the Campus Public Safety Staff and register. The emergency alert system notifies students of any emergency or crisis situation occurring on or near campus.

Sugarbush Ski Pass

Ski Pass Sign-up will also be available so you can get your season pass. Passes are available for $30 for Mount Ellen and $100 for the all Sugarbush trails. Not sure how you are going to get to the mountain? Weekly buses will take you to the mountain in peak season and other trips will be arranged over the course of the semester. Then you'll be ready to take advantage of their amazing ski and ride terrain as soon as the snowflakes begin to fly! Purchase Books
College Bookstore
Bring your class schedule to the bookstore to purchase your books. The Bookstore Staff will use your class schedule to grab all of your required books for your first semester. If you pre-ordered your books those are waiting for you to the left of the Bookstore at the Joyce Hall entrance. All you will need to do is bring your ID and your order number and the staff will happily get your pre-ordered books.

The St. Andrew's Pipe Band of Vermont will lead a formal processional as President David Finney, Provost Robin Abramson, College vice presidents and Champlain faculty in full academic regalia welcome new students to campus in the ceremony that officially begins the academic year. This College tradition also includes a keynote speaker and the presentation of the Champlain College 2012 Distinguished Citizen Award.

Utilizing video clips, television commercials, student interviews, and cellular phone generated audience polling Jim Matthews captivates his audience while highlighting the critical concerns facing college students including alcohol poisoning, hangovers, blackouts, drinking and driving, risky sexual activity, sexual assault, and much more. Buses will be available in the Bader parking lot to take you to the waterfront for a cruise around the lake. Buses will meet you directly after the events to drive you back to campus, Quarry Hill or Spinner Place.
Note: You must have a ticket to attend this event. Tickets can be picked up at the 7:00 P.M. "Beer, Booze and Books" event.

Sing, play music, read poetry, slam, do some stand-up, or simply speak your mind. The Grind is a safe space to get together with friends, meet people and have a good time. There will be plenty of free food, and if you like what you see, you can participate in the Grind every Wednesday night in the SLC Fireside Lounge.

INTRODUCTION TO YOUR ELECTRONIC PORTFOLIO (ePort)
In this 45-minute session you will learn how to build an electronic portfolio. You will also submit your first required assignment to your Core instructors! Throughout your time at Champlain you will be creating electronic portfolios to collect your best work and show off your achievements, and at the end of your four years here you will have a great way to strut your stuff for potential employers.

All residential students are required to attend this important program and learn the do's and don'ts of fire safety and campus theft prevention. We'll also explore campus alcohol, illegal substance, and noise violation policies, offer advice about what to do with your car now that you're all moved in, answer your campus safety questions, and provide valuable personal safety tips.

CHALLENGE EXAM FOR MATHEMATICS

Challenge Exams in Mathematics
All students at Champlain College are required to take at least one course in mathematics.  Students may waive (no credit given) this requirement or be placed into a higher-level math course by passing one of two Challenge Exams. The Challenge Exams are offered during New Student Orientation every fall.  If you feel you are qualified to take the appropriate exam, please register below. A score of 70% or better is required to pass the exam. If your program of study does not include College Algebra or Algebra & Trigonometry, you should not take either exam. College Algebra Challenge Exam
If MTH 120 (College Algebra) satisfies the math requirement for your program of study, you have the opportunity to waive this requirement (no credit given) by passing the College Algebra Challenge Exam.   These students may register for MTH 125 (Algebra and Trigonometry) but are free to choose any qualifying elective. This choice should be made in consultation with an academic advisor.

Algebra & Trigonometry Challenge Exam
Many programs require the completion of MTH 230 (Applied Calculus).  First year students are placed into this course or MTH 125 (Algebra & Trigonometry) based on high school records.  If you are registered to take MTH 125 (Algebra & Trigonometry) but feel you are qualified to start with the Calculus course, you should register to take the Algebra & Trigonometry Challenge Exam. Students who pass this exam are eligible and encouraged to register for MTH 230 (Applied Calculus).
