Job Hunting Tips from the pros!
The process for securing full-time professional employment has changed significantly over the last 20 years. Businesses have developed new ways of recruiting and screening perspective talent, and job seekers have had to adapt to these changes and learn new ways to market themselves more effectively. But remember, your Champlain College degree already places you ahead of the curve! Employers often report that their Champlain College alumni employees are very valuable. Here is more advice from the folks at Champlain Career Services to help guide you towards happily-ever-after-employment:
Tip 1: Always tailor your resume specifically to each job for which you are applying: To do this, carefully review the job posting and note the skills and qualifications you have that match the employer's position description. Include these qualifications in your resume using the same language from the job posting. Tailoring your resume enables the employer to see very quickly which qualities you have that match their need. If the employing companies are using any kind of resume scanning software, listing skills will help you to stand out.
Tip 2: Incorporate social media into your career search and professional life. Social media has become an excellent vehicle for job seekers - and those who are employed - to build reputations and relationships, as well as to stay current in one's industry. Although there are many social media sites, LinkedIn, Twitter, and Facebook are the three most commonly used sites. LinkedIn is a site that allows users to connect with other professionals, college alumni, recruiters, and employees within the companies that may be of interest to you. Twitter allows users to post brief informative messages and links to websites or articles of interest to your followers; Twitter can also be used in the job-search process as career coaches often tweet information, and there are even career-development tweet-ups (chats). Facebook allows users to "like" companies and share information with friends about job openings or helpful resources. It is very important to keep your online image consistent and professional, and to build a reputation as someone who not only asks for advice, but someone who helps others. Hiring managers use these tools to look up applicant's posts, blogs, tweets, online presence, and to see which applicants are taking initiative and keeping current.! Champlain alumni have a presence on each of these mediums for you to enjoy: Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn.
Tip 3: Brush up on the competencies that employers desire:. Many employers are identifying workforce competencies needed to support their organization's success. They are not only hiring for skills, but also hiring people based on how they accomplish work. Champlain College's undergraduate and graduate programs are designed to cultivate specific student competencies. A quick key-word search on www.champlain.edu or a conversation with a Continuing Professional Studies representative will provide you with information regarding programs and courses that may help you develop specific competencies.
And have faith! Job searching can be a lengthy and frustrating process; be persistent and think outside the box. Maybe your dream job is starting a blog or an after-school program, and those jobs can't be found on any job sites. If you are committed to your passion, then you are on the right track.
