TED BECK

President and Chief Executive Officer
National Endowment for Financial Education (NEFE)

Ted Beck joined the National Endowment for Financial Education (NEFE) as president and chief executive officer effective October 1, 2005. In November 2010, he was appointed the President's Advisory council on Financial Capability, a panel established by President Barack Obama to promote and enhance financial capability among the American people. Beck also serves on the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) Advisory Committee on Economic Inclusion, and the board of the national Jump$tart Coalition for Personal Financial Literacy. He previously served on President George W. Bush's President's Advisory Council on Financial Literacy as a member and chair of the Outreach Subcommittee from January 2008 to January 2010.

Beck is an alumnus of the UW-Madison School of Business, where he earned his MBA in International Business in 1976. He served on the Wisconsin Business Alumni Board of Directors from 1983 to 1985. He earned his undergraduate degree in Business Administration from the University of Notre Dame in 1975.

Beck also currently serves on the board of the Wisconsin Alumni Association. He previously served as Chairman of the Advisory Board of Directors of Gammex, Inc., and sat on the boards of Keylab, Madison Committee on Foreign Relations, International University Consortium for Executive Education, the Graduate School of Banking, the Wisconsin Public Utility Institute, Wilshire Variable Insurance Trust, and the Wilshire Mutual Funds, Inc. He also has served on the boards of Citicorp Securities, Inc., and the Cleveland Playhouse.

Philip R. Daniels is Market President and Senior Loan Officer for TD Bank, America's Most Convenient Bank®, in Vermont. TD Bank is one of the 10 largest banks in the United States, providing customers with a full range of financial products and services at more than 1,250 convenient locations from Maine to Florida. TD Bank is a member of TD Bank Group and a subsidiary of The Toronto-Dominion Bank of Toronto, Canada, a top 10 financial services company in North America and one of the few banks in the world rated Aaa by Moody's. Mr. Daniels began his banking career at Howard Bank in 1982 as a management trainee. After serving in roles of increasing responsibility, he eventually became president of Howard Bank, and later served as president of Banknorth Vermont.

Mr. Daniels is a member of the American Bankers Association's Government Relations Committee, the Vermont Bankers Association's Executive Committee, the Vermont Chamber of Commerce, Vermont Campus Compact, and the Finance Committee and Parish Council of Immaculate Heart of Mary Church. He also serves on the Vermont Regional Board of the University of Vermont and on the Fletcher Allen Health Care Foundation Board of Directors. In 2004, Mr. Daniels was named the Distinguished Citizen of the Year by the Boy Scouts of America; in June 2005, he was recognized as Vermont's Community Banker of the Year; and June 2009, he received the prestigious Multiple Sclerosis Hope Award for outstanding civic and community service.

Mr. Daniels is a graduate of the University of Vermont. He resides with his family in Williston, VT.

Ann DeMarle founded and directs Champlain College's Emergent Media Center and the Masters of Fine Arts in Emergent Media. Founder of the Game Development degrees, she launched the EMC upon the receipt of the Champlain College Roger Perry Endowed Chair, supporting innovation, change, and entrepreneurship. Completed projects include: Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Games for Health grant; Massachusetts General's Center for Integration of Medicine & Innovative Technology Emergency Response training game; student partnership with America's Army; an IBM project in virtual worlds; and BREAKAWAY, an episodic game sponsored by the UN Population Fund to end violent behavior against women.

ARNE DUNCAN

Secretary of Education
United States Department of Education

Arne Duncan was nominated to be United States Secretary of Education by President-elect Barack Obama and was confirmed by the U.S. Senate on Inauguration Day, Jan. 20, 2009. In his confirmation hearings, Duncan called education "the most pressing issue facing America," adding that "preparing young people for success in life is not just a moral obligation of society" but also an "economic imperative." "Education is also the civil rights issue of our generation," he said, "the only sure path out of poverty and the only way to achieve a more equal and just society." Duncan expressed his commitment to work under the leadership of President Obama and with all those involved in education "to enhance education in America, to lift our children and families out of poverty, to help our students learn to contribute to the civility of our great American democracy, and to strengthen our economy by producing a workforce that can make us as competitive as possible."

Prior to his appointment as U.S. Secretary of Education, Duncan served as the chief executive officer of the Chicago Public Schools, a position to which he was appointed by Mayor Richard M. Daley, from June 2001 through December 2008, becoming the longest-serving big-city education superintendent in the country.

Duncan graduated magna cum laude from Harvard University in 1987, majoring in sociology. He was co-captain of Harvard's basketball team and was named a first team Academic All-American. He credits basketball with his team-oriented and highly disciplined work ethic.

Duncan is married to Karen Duncan and they have two children, daughter Claire, 8, and son Ryan, 5, who attend a public elementary school in Arlington, VA.

JOHN EVERITT

Superintendent
South Burlington High School

After earning his undergraduate degree in psychology at the University of Colorado, he began working in education as a special education math teacher at Landmark School in Massachusetts. John entered graduate school at the University of Vermont where he completed a Masters Degree focusing on special education.

John has worked in Vermont public schools since 1977. His positions have included special education teacher and administrator, elementary teacher, math teacher, principal, and assistant superintendent for curriculum. Currently John serves the City of South Burlington, Vermont as Superintendent of Schools.

DAVID F. FINNEY

President
Champlain College

Dave Finney became the seventh president of Champlain College on July 1, 2005. In his first year as president, Champlain faculty passed a new core curriculum requirement that features a broad-based interdisciplinary approach to general education. Other initiatives since then include the development and completion of a campus master plan, the completion of a ten-year college-wide strategic plan, increased emphasis on institutional marketing and branding, an increase in the size of the faculty, the establishment of several new graduate programs, the creation of a life-skills curriculum and the establishment of Study Abroad campuses in Montreal and Dublin.

Under Dr. Finney, Champlain has a renewed emphasis on working to keep the Vermont economy vital and robust. The BYOBiz program was established to attract young entrepreneurs to Champlain so that they can grow their companies in Vermont. Champlain has also moved to attract greater numbers of students from Vermont by establishing the New Americans Scholarship program and the Vermont First Scholarship program. Expansion of the Single Parent Scholarship program has also occurred.

Dr. Finney earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in psychology from Westminster College, Pennsylvania and a Master of Arts in higher education from Bowling Green State University. He holds a Master of Science in adult education and a doctorate in adult education, both from Teachers College, Columbia University. His primary area of scholarly interest is in Higher Education and in effective teaching in Continuing Education. President Finney serves on the boards of ECHO, Vermont Campus Compact, Vermont Higher Education Council, Association of Vermont Independent Colleges, Lake Champlain Regional Chamber of Commerce and the Vermont Business Roundtable.

JOHN M. GANNON

Senior Vice President, Investor Education, FINRA
President, FINRA Investor Education Foundation

John M. Gannon is Senior Vice President for Investor Education at FINRA. In this capacity, he is responsible for the development and operations of FINRA's investor education program. He also serves as President of the FINRA Investor Education Foundation, where he manages the Foundation's grant making and programmatic efforts to educate and protect investors, especially traditionally underinvested groups of Americans, including young adults, women, Native Americans, and members of U.S. military. He has been with FINRA since September 2001.

Before assuming his present duties, Mr. Gannon was Deputy Director of the Securities and Exchange Commission's (SEC) Office of Investor Education & Assistance. Mr. Gannon also served for seven years as Senior Counsel in the SEC's Division of Enforcement where he brought cases and investigated violations of federal securities laws. He began his career as an attorney with the law firm of Paul, Frank & Collins, Inc. in Burlington, Vermont. A 1984 graduate of Middlebury College in Middlebury, Vermont, Mr. Gannon earned his Juris Doctor degree from Suffolk University Law School in 1987 and is a member of the Vermont Bar. He represents FINRA on the Board of Directors of the Jump$tart Coalition for Personal Financial Literacy.

CHRIS GRAFF

Chris Graff is Vice President of Corporate Communications and Government Relations for National Life Group, a Montpelier-based Fortune 1000 financial services company. He joined National Life in 2006 after 28 years working for The Associated Press. He is a trustee of Vermont College of Fine Arts and the Vermont Historical Society, served as a member of the Council on the Future of Vermont, and is a contributing editor of Vermont Business Magazine.

DAN HEBERT

Director of Professional Development Instruction and the Northeast Regional Director
Jump$tart Coalition

A strong advocate for personal finance education, Dan Hebert is the Director of Professional Development Instruction and the Northeast Regional Director for the Jump$tart Coalition for Personal Financial Literacy - an umbrella group of more than one hundred governmental agencies, national organizations, and corporations devoted in part to personal finance education for young people.

Previously, Dan was Vice President of Consumer Lending for St. Mary's Bank with responsibility for all consumer loan administration, including loan origination, credit card portfolio management, and collections. His consumer loan background began with AVCO Financial Services and has grown through his work experience with other New Hampshire banks.

He has served as President of the NH Consumer Credit Association and was a two-term member of the Professional Standards Board within the NH Department of Education. He is Vice-Chair of the board of directors of the New Hampshire Higher Education Assistance Foundation. In addition, he is a current trustee of the National Consumers League in Washington, D.C. He is currently the Executive Director of NH Partners in Education, which develops and coordinates school volunteer programs in New Hampshire. He was recently appointed by Governor John Lynch to serve on a commission to study access to consumer credit in New Hampshire.

DAVID LAMBERTI

David Lamberti is entering his 7th year as a Business & Technology Teacher at Burlington High School, where he teaches Career Explorations, Personal Finance and School Publications. In addition to his teaching duties, David serves as the Student Council Advisor, BHS Newspaper Advisor (The Register), BHS webmaster, JV Golf Coach and is involved in technology integration across academic departments. Prior to teaching, David attended the University of Pennsylvania where he obtained a degree in economics from the Wharton School of Business. David's private sector professional experience includes hospitality, real estate management and development, mortgages and Information Technology consulting. David is the father of a teenage daughter living in Munich, Germany and is an avid golfer.

STEVE ORZECH

Steve is currently a social studies and technology teacher at Vergennes Union High School in Vermont. He received a Bachelors of Science in Computer Information Systems from Purdue University in 1988 and worked as a Systems Analyst for the DuPont Company until 1992. Returning to Purdue in 1992 he received his teaching certificate in social studies and entered the classroom teaching social studies, business and technology for several years. In 2009 he received his Master's of Education from the University of Virginia and came to Vergennes to help launch the Personal Finance graduation requirement program.

BETH PEARCE

Vermont State Treasurer
State of Vermont

Beth Pearce was appointed Vermont State Treasurer in January 2011. The appointment, by Governor Peter Shumlin, followed the resignation of Treasurer Jeb Spaulding who stepped down to assume the role of Secretary of Administration. Treasurer Pearce has more than 30 years of experience in government finance at both the state and local levels. She served as Vermont's Deputy Treasurer for more than seven years before assuming her current role as Treasurer. As Deputy Treasurer, she was responsible for a full range of operations including retirement administration of the three state-wide systems for State employees, teachers, and municipal employees. She also was responsible for unclaimed property, accounting, budget, debt and capital financing, cash management, investment of short-term funds in State custody, and risk management.

Prior to joining the Vermont State Treasurer's Office, she served as Deputy Treasurer for Cash Management at the Massachusetts State Treasurer's Office from 1999-2003; Deputy Comptroller for the Town of Greenburgh, New York; and as the Accounting Manager and Financial Operations Manager for the Town of West Hartford, Connecticut. In addition, she has served as a fiscal officer with the Massachusetts Department of Social Services and as a project director for the Massachusetts Executive Office of Human Services.

Beth has a BA from the University of New Hampshire. She has prepared financial reports that have received the Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting by the Government Finance Officers Association. She resides in Barre, Vermont.

JOHN PELLETIER

John Pelletier is the Director of the Center for Financial Literacy at Champlain College and the managing principal of Sterling Valley Consulting LLC, an independent consulting firm specializing in advice to financial services companies. John has more than 20 years of experience in the investment management industry and has served as Chief Operating Officer and Chief Legal Officer at some of the largest asset management firms in the United States. Previous roles include: Chief Operating Officer and Chief Legal Officer of Natixis Global Associates; (the owner of the Loomis Sayles Funds, the Oakmark Fund and other institutional asset management firms) Chief Legal Officer of Eaton Vance Corp.; and General Counsel of Funds Distributor, Inc. (currently a part of Citibank). John has also worked for The Boston Company, Ropes & Gray and Sidley & Austin.

John has a B.A. in Economics from Assumption College and a J.D. and an M.A. in Public Policy Studies from Duke University. John is married with three sons (ages 7, 10 and 13).

GOVERNOR PETER SHUMLIN

Governor of Vermont

Peter Shumlin is the 81st governor of Vermont.

His career in public service began in Putney almost 30 years ago. In 1980 at the age of 24 he was elected to serve on the town's select board. In 1990 Montpelier came calling when Governor Madeleine Kunin appointed Peter to fill an empty seat in the Vermont House of Representatives.

After three years in the House he ran for one of Windham County's two Senate seats. He was elected in 1992 and would represent Windham County for the next 10 years. During his second term he was elected Democratic leader and in 1997 his colleagues chose him to serve as the President pro-tempore, the chamber's top leadership post.

Peter ran unsuccessfully for lieutenant governor in 2002. After a four year absence he returned to the Senate in 2006 where he was again selected to serve as the President pro-tempore.

During his 13 years in the Senate Peter served on the Rules Committee, the Finance Committee, the Transportation Committee and the Appropriations Committee.

He has worked to fight global climate change, bring broadband to every corner of the state and provide health care for every Vermonter.

He worked with Governor Dean to balance the state budget. During the current economic crisis he stood up to the Douglas administration, working alongside Speaker Shap Smith to pass responsible legislation that trimmed programs where possible, while reinvesting in programs and services that Vermonters need now more than ever.

And believing that all Vermonters deserve to be treated equally, he played a leading role in the passage of the first in the nation civil unions law and the 2010 Marriage Equality Act.

Peter, 55, is the father of two daughters Olivia, 20, and Rebecca, 19 and lives in Putney. In his free time he enjoys running, hiking and cross country skiing. He likes to fish, hunt and garden and can sometimes be found spreading manure and cutting hay at the dairy farm where he is a partner.

TERESA SMITH

Mathematics and Financial Planning Teacher

Teresa Smith has a BA in European History from Boston University, a Masters in Education from Plymouth State University and will graduate in May with a Certificate of Advanced Graduate Study in Curriculum and Teacher Efficacy from Union Institute & University. She has been teaching students about personal finance within her math classes for the past 13 years, and currently teaches that along with standard math classes at Vergennes Union High School. She resides in Panton, Vermont.

EDWIN WEBBLEY

Vergennes Union High School

Ed Webbley has been Co-Principal at Vergennes Union High School for six years. During this time, we came to the realization that our Personal Finance course consistently earned student acclaim, and many of those students recommended that we adopt it as a graduation requirement. Students and I approached our school board, who agreed. Personal Finance credit can be earned through the math department, the social studies department, or may earn 1/2 of a technology credit. Ed is the VPA 2011 Robert F. Pierce Vermont Secondary Principal of the year.

ART WOOLF

President, Vermont Council on Educational Development
Associate Professor of Economics, University of Vermont

Dr. Woolf joined the Economics Department at UVM in 1980 after receiving his Ph.D. in economics at the University of Wisconsin in Madison. He received his undergraduate education from Cornell University, where he majored in American history. He was interested in both economics and history and wrote his dissertation in economic history, examining the impact of electrification on U.S. manufacturing in the early twentieth century.

In 1988, Dr. Woolf took a leave of absence from UVM and began a three-year stint as State Economist for Governor Madeleine Kunin, where he learned firsthand about how to apply economic principles to public policy issues. When he returned to UVM in 1991, his research interests broadened to include public policy analysis, especially focused on state and local government. He spent a lot of time trying to explain the economy to non economists. During the 1990s he wrote a regular column for Vermont Magazine and is currently editor of the monthly The Vermont Economy Newsletter.

In 1999 he started The Vermont Council on Economic Education, an organization that helps Vermont teachers in grades K-12 integrate economics in their curriculum. He works closely with the Council for Economic Education. Their website is found at www.councilforeconed.org
