The Conduct Review process offers a variety of educational opportunities for students as a response to alleged violations of College policy. Most violations of policy are resolved through a one-on-one conversation between a conduct officer and the student, resulting in sanctions. Some cases are referred to a General Conduct Review Board or an Academic Conduct Review Board. There are about 20 scheduled hearings per year. Cases will be forwarded to a Board at the discretion of the Director of the Office of Student Conduct or a representative of the Provost's Office. In these hearings students who have been documented as being in violation of college policy, have the opportunity to appear before a group of impartial faculty, staff, and students and share their perspective on the situation.
The College recognizes that academic conduct cases and general conduct cases have similarities and differences. The greatest differences occur with violations of the Academic Honesty Policy. In order to provide the most valuable educational experience for the student, the hearings for academic honesty cases might include additional individuals with specific expertise.

Students are encouraged to speak on their own behalf and may bring an advocate or advisor, but only those directly involved in the hearing may speak. Witnesses and victims do not appear at Review Board Hearings.
Upon receipt of a complaint in writing regarding a student, the student(s) involved will be contacted by a conduct officer to give individual statements. Any witnesses will also be interviewed and their statements will be a matter of record. Witnesses and complainants do not appear before the Board. Students who are being referred for a Conduct Review Board hearing will meet with the Materials Coordinator to review all of the materials being presented at the Hearing. The Materials Coordinator is also responsible for preparing the student for the Hearing, by talking through the process and answering any questions the student may have. A letter will be sent to the student to confirm the time and place of the hearing. Included in the notification letter will be an information sheet on the process. Students will be given every chance to appear before the Board, but they will be made aware that if they do not make an appearance before the Board, a decision will be made as to sanction without their input. A student appearing before the Board may bring a support person; but all communication occurs between board volunteers and the student.
Note for Academic Honesty Violations: It is likely that the faculty member issuing the violation will be present at the hearing because the nature of the violation is sometimes complex and specific to a particular subject matter. To fully understand the material, the volunteers can benefit from knowledge offered by the instructor. The instructor does not participate in the discussion regarding sanction.
Students appearing before the Board will have an opportunity to review all materials pertaining to the case before the hearing. All students will have individual hearings and will be evaluated on their own involvement even if they are involved in a group incident. Every effort will be made to keep review board proceedings confidential, and when necessary, the identity of witnesses and victims may be kept anonymous.
The task of the Review Board is to determine responsibility and decide on an appropriate sanction. The Materials Coordinator will provide the Review Board with all incident reports and statements relevant to each case. Decisions will be made on the available materials. Students may provide information at the hearing, but a hearing will not be postponed while additional information is gathered. Following the Hearing, the Facilitator will meet with the student and discuss the sanction. All sanctions may be appealed.
Multiple Academic Honesty Violations
Students who are involved in multiple violations of the Academic Honesty policy may be referred to an Academic Conduct Review Board. According to policy, first violations will be documented by the faculty member, shared with the student and kept on file in the Provost's Office. Subsequent violations will be documented by the faculty member, shared with the student, placed on file in the Provost's Office and may be forwarded to the Academic Conduct Review Board for additional sanctions. The entire college community bears the responsibility for academic integrity, and its preservation requires the active participation of all faculty and students. In these hearings the reporting faculty may be present and will be made aware of the outcome.
In these cases, the Materials Coordinator will share all the relevant materials with the student prior to the hearing, and will prepare the student for the Hearing, by talking through the process and answering any questions the student may have. Also present at these hearings may be the reporting faculty member(s) and/or an expert in the subject matter being discussed the nature of the violation is sometimes complex and specific to a particular subject matter. To fully understand the material, the volunteers can benefit from knowledge offered by the instructor or an expert. The instructor or expert does not participate in the discussion regarding sanction.
After hearing all the information and engaging in a short period of discussion, the Board will make a decision (The student will be asked to leave the room during this time). The student will be notified of the Board's sanction by the Facilitator as soon as possible. The Facilitator will speak with the student privately to deliver the sanction. If immediate notification is not possible, notification will happen within 48 hours. All students have the right to appeal. The Facilitator is responsible for informing the student of the Appeal Process.Students must appeal within 48 hours of receiving the sanction.
