Professor Champ Soncrant has been teaching at Champlain College since 1971. He has taught almost every accounting course at the college. Currently, he focuses on Federal Income Taxes, Cost Accounting and CPA Review. In addition to his teaching responsibilities, Professor Soncrant developed and manages the VITA (Volunteer Income Taxpayer Assistance) Program. This program has benefited thousands of needy Vermont residents with filling their Federal and State Income Taxes. In addition, he served as Faculty Senate President for several years initiating many changes in the administration of benefits and salary plans for faculty. Professor Soncrant has also chaired and contributed to many faculty committees. Outstanding student evaluations speak volumes about Professor Soncrant dedication to his students in the classroom. In 2004, Professor Soncrant was the recipient of the Excellence in Teaching Finalist by Vermont Campus Compact. Professor Soncrant has taught and consulted at Fortune 500 Companies; such as, IBM and GE.
Before coming to Champlain College, Professor Soncrant was a Cost Accountant for a manufacturing company in Boston. Several years after arriving in Vermont he started his own Tax /Consulting Business and operated it successfully for 22 years.
Professor Soncrant’s degrees include: a Bachelor Degree in Accounting from Bentley University and a Master’s Degree in Education from Saint Michael’s College. He is a Certified Public Account (CPA) and a Certified Management Accountant (CMA). He is a member of Vermont Society of CPAs, American Institute of CPAs, Institute of Management Accountants, and Certified Fraud Examiners.
Professor Soncrant lives in South Burlington with his wife, Joanne, who is an alumnus of Champlain College. They are the proud owners of a very special yellow Labrador retriever name “Blue.” He is a Canine Good Citizen. Joanne and Blue are members of Delta Society “Pet Partner” Therapy Dog Program. As a team, Joanne and Blue have brought many smiles to senior citizens confined to nursing homes and to children who participate in local summer camps. Together, Joanne and Champ have travelled the world experiencing many adventures; such as, mountaineering, trekking, rock and ice climbing, and biking. Their trips have brought them to Nepal, Australia, New Zealand, and Europe. Closer to home, they have bagged all 49 high peaks in the White Mountains of NH and spend many hours hiking in our Green Mountain State.
Professor Soncrant has a very simple philosophy. He likes to have fun in the classroom. He takes the challenge of teaching difficult topics by breaking them down so the students can understand them. He takes pride in his students and what they can accomplish after his classes. Many students go on to pass the CPA exam and are placed in excellent jobs upon graduation. This is all a reflection of the quality instruction Professor Soncrant has built his reputation on. His rewards and gratification is when he receives a note from a student thanking him for all his help over the years. It is this type of appreciation that keeps Professor Soncrant coming back into the classroom. Would you believe he still admits to getting nervous when he stands up in front of a new class? He states “when this feeling disappears, it will be time for me to retire.”
