Elaine Young is an Associate Professor of Marketing who teaches courses in Marketing, Internet-Marketing, Non-Profit and Social Marketing and Marketing Management. She also has developed the marketing course for Champlain's MBA and teaches both Core and Communication classes focusing on Technology and the impact of Technology on society and communication.
She has a Ph.D. in Organizational Management from Capella University, her dissertation research examined the technology use and adoption of college students and she developed a teaching model for faculty to follow when teaching a technology application in a classroom environment. She also holds a M.S. in Internet Strategy Management from Marlboro College, a B.S. in Communication and Public Relations from SUNY Brockport and an A.S. in Communication from Genesee Community College. She has over ten years of experience in the Marketing and Public Affairs profession, specializing in non-profits.
She has been teaching at Champlain since 2000.
In her own words:
I use my industry experience to bring the working world to both my classrooms and curriculum. I have experience in marketing, public relations, media relations, event management, internet strategy as well as an in-depth knowledge of interactive and social media techniques, strategies and tools.
My professional experience, primarily in the non-profit and advocacy sector, has given me an appreciation for the importance of teaching students how to engage with the communities they are in, and how to apply successful business techniques to support causes and engage various publics. I am able to capitalize on this experience in the classroom by integrating experiential problem-based learning into the curriculum, which often involves non-profit and advocacy organizations. Over the past few years students in my classes have worked with organizations including Greyhound Rescue, FanRanter.com, Hope for Women, the Girl Scouts of the Green and White Mountains, Stowe Area Association, and Steeze. First year students have the opportunity to meet with local marketers including the marketing manager from Burton, one of the co-founders of Nationally-known KSV Communications and marketing pros from Ben and Jerrys.
There is more to what I bring to the classroom than my professional self, however. I am passionate about life-long learning and being curious so one of my favorite pass times is reading. I also enjoy quilting and spend a great deal of time with my cats. But primarily I am a mom of a wonderful 13 year old daughter who keeps me very busy.
I love teaching at Champlain because it allows me to connect with the students and truly mentor them. Class sizes allow me to know all my students by name (as long as my memory holds out) and get to know their strengths so that I can teach more effectively. I enjoy watching students make connections -- when the light bulb goes off it is great to see! I also understand that students today are juggling many different priorities and it's important for them to be able to connect with someone in their chosen field of study. My role as faculty advisor is one of the most challenging aspects of my job -- and one that I find the most rewarding. Students seem to appreciate being able to come and talk about both challenges and successes and get advice from me about careers, internships and opportunities that come up outside of the classroom.
Students would warn you that I drink too much coffee, talk too fast and am a hard grader. Don't let that scare you...although the coffee thing, well, that's scary!
You'd never guess that I play World of Warcraft and have a high level Blood Elf Rogue. Of course, when you take classes with me you will learn that and a lot more!
