readings, stories of service, and

(3 week cross-disciplinary art installment)

throughout time, highlighted activists,

through the IRS and the Vermont
Department of Taxes to prepare income
tax forms in order to assist low-income
and elderly Vermonters, refugees
and immigrants from many countries,
often working through interpreters

are placed in Burlington Schools
with ELL students
- DREAM program
connects Champlain students with
underprivileged students in local
community
- “Practically
Speaking” offers a series
of ten-week sessions in Spanish
and French languages -- with the
goal of stimulating interest in
learning a language and in study
abroad

Movie Night” shows a foreign
film on campus, introduced by someone
able to alert students to “differences”
to watch for in the film

Faculty Exchange Program provides
maximum opportunities to share a
faculty member’s views with
a large cross section of students
(3 Champlain faculty to Mumbai and
two here so far)
- Vermont Global
Trade Partnership
- Institutional
support of the Vermont Council on
World Affairs, whose missions is
to "promote an awareness and
understanding of world affairs among
all Vermonters," provides speakers
and programs on topics of global
interest and importance, open to
Champlain students faculty and staff
(such as the Global Symposia featuring
Thomas Friedman, Robert Reich and
Lester Brown)
- Music Makers
has a commitment to learn and perform
songs from other cultures and languages
- Champlain
Theatre provides opportunities for
students to confront "otherness"
issues, both as audience and participants;
performances include "A Raisin
in the Sun" (African-American
struggles with race issues and economic
challenges) and "The Trojan
Women" (brutality against women
during war time) and events under
the umbrella of The Voices of Diversity
Project
