On Tuesday, Sept. 10, 2002, Champlain College
and Saint Michael's College present renowned Middle East expert
Thomas Friedman, three-time winner of the Pulitzer Prize and foreign
affairs columnist for The New York Times, for a talk titled
"The Global Economy and U.S. Foreign Policy after September
11th."
Scheduled to memorialize the Sept. 11th, 2001,
terror attacks, the event launches a Vermont Global Symposium of
talks and seminars to be held throughout the year on college campuses
and in the community. The lecture is at 1:30 pm at Saint Michael's
Ross Sports Center.
Members of the Saint Michael's and Champlain College
communities may now obtain a free ticket at the college bookstores
with their college ID.
Tickets for the general public are available at
a cost of $15, and $5 for seniors and students. They are now on
sale at Border's bookstore, Saint Michael's College and Champlain
College bookstores and the Vermont Chamber of Commerce in Berlin,
Green Mountain Academy for Lifelong Learning in Manchester, as well
as the FlynnTix Regional Box Office in Burlington at 86-FLYNN or

Thomas Friedman is presented by Champlain College,

Friedman is regarded is one of America's leading
interpreters of world affairs. He has been writing columns from
various Middle East countries since the Sept. 11 attacks; the columns
comprise a new book to be published in September. His expertise
is sought out now more than ever and he is a regular on the TV shows
"Meet the Press" and "The NewsHour with Jim Lehrer."
He won his first Pulitzer in 1983 for international
reporting from Beirut and his second in 1988 for international reporting
from Israel. His book From Beirut to Jerusalem won the National
Book Award in 1989. The Lexus and the Olive Tree, published
in 2000, won the Overseas Press Club award for best foreign policy
book, and has been translated into 20 languages. The Vermont Humanities
Council will coordinate 10 follow-up reading and discussion programs
around the state using The Lexus and the Olive Tree. Friedman's
foreign affairs columns, appearing on the op-ed pages of The
Times twice a week, earned him the 2002 Pulitzer Prize for Distinguished
Commentary for his columns on the 9/11 tragedies.
