Respect in Our Workplace: Diversity and Inclusion

Champlain College's Human Resources Department reports that employee diversity on campus is on the rise. Over a two year period, faculty diversity increased 5.4% and diversity in staff by 6.5%. The College remains committed to hiring a diverse group of people to educate and serve its students. In fact, two of the College's Strategic Planning Goals are "to excite, engage and empower faculty and staff" and "to continue to develop a diverse and inclusive community on campus."

The College's Diversity and Inclusion Committee reviews college practices and makes recommendations to continue building on our diverse and inclusive community. This Committee is also responsible for producting the Campus Climate Report, which highlights results from various measures of diversity and inclusion on campus.

Office of Diversity and InclusionChamplain's Office of Diversity and Inclusion (ODI) supports groups such as the LGBTQ (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender & Questioning) Alliance, the International Group and STAND (Student Anti-Genocide Coalition ) The Office also provides English language tutoring to refugee and international students, as well as faculty and staff. ODI regularly hosts events including a brown-bag lunch series with featured guest speakers from the community, a major celebration for Martin Luther King Day and various month-long celebrations with topics such as Asian Heritage, Black History, International Films and Native Americans. These events are free and open to the entire campus and wider Burlington community.

Among the ways Champlain College demonstrates its commitment to diversity is through its unique programs and scholarships. The New American Scholarship, for example, offers financial assistance to former refugees and to date, has provided support for students hailing from 15 countries. Champlain's Vermont First Scholarship is another need-based program; this scholarship has been designed to broaden access to a bachelor's degree to qualified, academically talented students whose parents did not attend college. Another Champlain signature concept, The Single Parent Program helps financially-eligible single parents who are full-time, undergraduate students from Vermont meet tuition costs.
