Champlain College program in India

Mumbai

Mumbai, IndiaKnown as the “maximum city,” Mumbai is one of the most exciting places to live and study in the world.  Mumbai, formerly known as Bombay, is home to 16 million people. Imagine a world of the sharpest of contrasts: stunning beauty cheek by jowl with world-class crowding, Bollywood stars mingling with street urchins, days of surf crashing and evenings of gentle breezes from the Arabian Sea, traffic jams side-by-side with cows and elephants on the streets…this is Mumbai, the commercial hub of the Indian subcontinent, yet a place where you will meet families who have been ensconced in the same neighborhood for generations, where television is a poor excuse for a window with a view, or where the smell of exotic food wafts from every doorway.

For those of you planning an internship in Mumbai, you will also be impressed by the sheer scope of opportunities, whether in software development, business, social work, or the hospitality industry.  We have already had students placed in positions where they have worked on marketing schemes for an Indian winery, have put on a Christmas-time rock and roll festival, have worked with HIV children, and interned at some of the most progressive high-tech firms in the world.

Literature buffs will delight in the fact that Rudyard Kipling, author of The Jungle Book and other favorites, was born here a hundred and fifty years ago and Salman Rushdie (of Satanic Verses fame) was just seen cavorting with another film star.  History fans will be regaled with tales of the British in Mahim Fort raining cannon shots across the harbor at the Portuguese soldiers who guarded Bandra Fort.  Those interested in architecture will delight in seeing the grand buildings from the British Raj period…and railroad fans will be awe-struck at the sheer number of people who ride the commuter rail each morning.  In Bombay, be prepared to be stunned!
