Program Details about the GIV - IT & Digital Media summer institute
GIV provides young people with intensive, hands-on learning experiences in college settings. The Governor's Institute on Information Technology & Digital Media is eight days jam-packed with all things IT. You'll access state-of-the-art equipment, the hardware and software of your dreams, and work with professionals at the forefront of their fields. Electronic game design, cybersecurity, coding, digital video, Photoshop, web entrepreneurship, object-oriented programming, and more are on the menu. You'll be able to choose from tracks in game design, coding and cybersecurity, or "advanced webistry" (interactive web design and entrepreneurship) to focus on in depth. You'll work with some of the newest developments in the IT world, including Champlain College's new 3-D printers.
At this Institute, you can:
- Build an actual online business from start to finish
- Explore the intersection between IT and art, or IT and social change.
- Gain heavy-duty programming language skills
- Make new friends who share your interest in technology
- Learn about the technical, artistic & business aspects of IT
Sample Daily Schedule:
The daily program will include classes in the mornings, field trips and other experiential learning in the afternoons, and fun activities in the evenings.

Beyond the classroom, the program includes group tours to local businesses such as the innovative digital marketers at Dealer.com and the digital forensics lab at the Leahy Center for Digital Investigation. And after classes are done, the GIV experience includes fun activities like Game Night, Murder Mystery, Humans vs. Zombies, Beach Trip, Movie Night and Talent Show.
About the Program Director:
Coberlin "Coby" Brownell is the Program Director for the IT & Digital Media institute.
Coby brings to the role a strong background in both arts and technology, and a deep passion for mentoring. A UVM graduate and former digital asset analyst, brand development expert, and strategist at Jager Di Paola Kemp for clients including Burton, Nike, XBOX 360, Merrell, and Timex, for many years Brownell has devoted his spare time to working with local youth groups and art galleries. Having recently completed his Master of Fine Arts degree in Emergent Media, Brownell is currently an Assistant Professor for Champlain College's Division of Communications & Creative Media.
