Program Highlights

Designed by Industry Leaders

In addition to including the recommendations of our advisory board and other broadcast professionals actively employed in the broadcasting field, the broadcasting program follows the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communications recommendations for undergraduate study. These guidelines emphasize the inherent connection between strategy and tactics, theory and practice. When such a major is strengthened by exposure to the business environment, as does ours, it better prepares you to meet the increasing demand for qualified, well-rounded broadcast professionals.

Hands-on learning, real-world experience and a solid academic curriculum form the foundation for your career in the information age.

As a student in Champlain’s Broadcasting program, you will explore the countless ways people and organizations communicate with each other using words, images, music and design. You’ll learn to analyze mass media with a critical eye, studying the impact on society and exploring related ethical and legal issues, and you’ll develop skills to express your own ideas clearly and forcefully.

This program is designed around a primary goal: to inspire students into elevating our culture through the creation of thoughtful, responsible communication.

  • Learn about all aspects of the broadcasting field -- You’ll learn both the tactical skills (writing, understanding of media, etc.) needed to succeed on a day-to-day basis and the “big picture” strategic orientation that organizations of all types are seeking to help them deal with today’s increasingly complex communications challenges.

  • Master professional skills and procedures using cutting-edge technology -- Gain hands-on experience with industry-quality equipment in digital editing suites, a television studio, plus numerous video labs, computer labs and audio studios. Champlain offers state-of-the-art facilities to teach professional practices so you can land an entry-level position armed with an array of finely honed skills.

  • Learn through a mix of theory and hands-on experience -- Classes range from production-oriented, where you’ll learn to script, direct, shoot and edit videos shot on location, to the theoretical, where you’ll learn the historical and critical context of mass communication within a context of cultural, economic and technological factors, enabling you to create ethical, enlightened work.

  • Gain an integrated, interdisciplinary approach to media education -- By learning as many facets of the field as possible, you’ll gain flexibility and depth of experience. The curriculum combines production, scriptwriting, history, theory and management, plus a strong foundation in business, to help you develop the confidence, experience, creativity and discipline necessary to find employment in the media industry.

  • Learn about real-life environments from industry experts -- As mentors both in and out of the classroom, the faculty contribute a wealth of experience from a variety of professional backgrounds including radio, television, public relations, journalism, advertising, publishing, theater and film.

  • Get involved in an internship -- Jump-start your career with a 140-hour internship your senior year at a communication company, government agency, broadcasting outlet or public institution. This real-world experience is critical in this major to provide you with a production portfolio for your employment search.
