Emergent Landscape Speaker Series

The MFA in Emergent Media degree program is proud to host a range of engaging speakers as part of its fourth Emergent Landscape Speaker Series. The series is part of the EMM 510 - The Emergent Landscape class which explores the questions, "Who are the thought leaders in emergent technologies, and what are they thinking?

Visiting thought leaders, practitioners, entrepreneurs, researchers and scholars will present their work and concepts in a discussion series on current trends impacting communications. Special attention will be given to the origins and evolution of these ideas. 2013 Speakers will include:

Lars Torres, State of Vermont's Office of the Creative Economy

Lars TorresLars is director of Vermont's Office of the Creative Economy within the Agency of Commerce and Community Development. The Office provides networking, research, and technical assistance resources to entrepreneurs in film and new media, software and game development, advertising and marketing, and the manufacturing arts. Prior to joining the Agency Lars served as Innovation Prize Advisor to the Office of Science and Technology at the US Agency for International Development and before that as Program Manager at the MIT Public Service Center where he led the design and development of the MIT IDEAS Global Challenge. Lars lives in Cabot, Vermont with his family where he maintains a studio for collage and mixed media work.

Chris Barr, Knight Foundation

Chris BarrChris Barr is an artist, designer, and media professional living and working in Miami, FL. As a program officer for media innovation at Knight Foundation, he thinks about new ways information and technology can positively impact communities. He works directly with grantees in the prototype program and aids the Journalism & Media Innovation grantees with design and user experience support. http://www.knightfoundation.org/staff/chris-barr/

Gary Goldberger, FableVision

Gary GoldbergerFableVision is a Boston-based educational media company. FableVision creates educational software and story-based media for children and adults. In addition to publishing educational software, books and films, FableVision collaborates with creative partners and producers to develop animation and interactive solutions for broadcast, web, school and museum applications. As FableVision's Co-Founder & President, Gary Goldberger is torchbearer of the company's mission, setting strategic goals and building cross-industry partnerships and alliances, with a special focus on digital gaming - including PBS/PBS Kids, MIT Education Arcade, Nickelodeon/Noggin, Scholastic/Weston Woods, and Jim Henson Productions. Gary is a strong believer in the possibility and potential of digital media to help solve the worlds' most pressing problems, along with using media & technology to making learning more engaging for young and old alike.
