Program Competencies

Upon completion of the MFA in Emergent Media, a graduate will be able to:

  • Deconstruct, evaluate, employ and re-assess graphic and animated image making best practices such as color, form, space, time, etc.

  • Deconstruct, evaluate, employ and re-assess best practices in interactivity design and networked interactions.

  • Evaluate, employ and improve upon programming or scripting languages to achieve project goals.

  • Apply discipline-specific research methodology, observing, collecting and analyzing data to create appropriate media solutions. 

  • Identify, compare and evaluate neurological, cultural and historical underpinnings of human communication, competitiveness and collaboration.

  • Identify, compare and critique the social impacts of technological innovation and communication processes.

  • Work collaboratively in multi-generational, virtual and cross-functional team environments.

  • Employ leadership skills;

    • Assemble and manage personnel, toolsets and facilities appropriate to project goals;

    • Implement management tools;

    • Mentor and lead training efforts;

    • Create an environment of collaborative critique;

    • Maximize human potential towards completion of project goals.

  • Build innovative, interactive, network-enabled media applications and virtual experiences that:

    • Invent new concepts for self-expression and group collaboration;

    • Solve complex business, social and educational problems;

    • Employ the concepts of interactivity, participation, time, space, measurement systems and cultural context;

    • Build upon a variety of technology tools, platforms and devices.

  • Write at a professional level to explain, champion and defend development of new communication media processes and products.

  • Use oral presentation skills at a professional level to explain, champion, and defend development of new communication media processes and products.

  • Exhibit meta-cognitive strategies during academic and project-based learning experiences; articulate the personal learning and growth that has resulted from those experiences.
