COOLEST LIBRARIAN EVER

AndyWe love bragging about Andy Burkhardt, the Emerging Technologies Librarian at Champlain. Last year News Wire shamelessly boasted when he won a big “Next Gen” Librarian award. This summer, his blog, Information Tyrannosaur, was named the best Academic Library blog in the 2011 Salem Press Library Blog Awards. To check out his blog and learn more about Andy, visit andyburkhardt.com. Better still, come to campus and find him in the library!

SOUNDS GOOD!

Champlain is known for its depth of specializations—that is, specialized areas of study in specific professions so students can gain mastery-level knowledge and skills. Coming in the fall of 2012, is a new specialization that continues Champlain’s tradition of staying on the leading edge of market trends: Sonic Arts. The Sonic Arts specialization is a great offering for students seeking to integrate music, audio production and sound design into their program of study. Courses in the specialization include classes in Audio Production, Synthesis and Sound Design, Film Scoring, Advanced Audio Production and Advanced Projects in Sonic Arts.

A MAN OF LETTERS

SarahTim Brookes, Program Director of Champlain’s Professional Writing major, was recently featured in The Atlantic and the New York Times for his “Endangered Alphabets” exhibit and its companion book. The project, begun in 2006, aims to preserve the world’s endangered alphabets by carving them into Vermont maple in what is both a beautiful piece of art and a reminder that in the push for assimilation, the world is quickly losing parts of its heritage.

Job Crisis? Not for Our Grads

GRADUATES FROM THE CLASS of 2010 have a huge advantage over many of their peers from other institutions when it comes to making it in the real world--the majority have already landed jobs in their chosen fields.

According to the "2010 Champlain College Employment Report" issued in May 2011 by the College’s Career Services Office, nearly nine out of 10 graduates (86.8 percent, to be exact) from the Class of ’10 reported that they had already secured relevant employment in their field of study.

The high placement of members of the Class of 2010 within one year of graduation represents a 3.4% increase over the previous year, and Ian Mortimer, Vice President for Enrollment, expects the trend to continue: "We have every reason to believe that the employment numbers for the Class of 2011 will be even higher," he says. "A leading indicator for the Class of 2011 employment numbers is the overwhelming success of this past April's Job Fair for graduating seniors and students seeking internships and jobs. We had to turn away nearly two dozen employers because of lack of space to accommodate them. We feel fortunate that local, regional and national employers see the value of hiring our graduates."

New Director of Admissions

SarahChamplain College has named Sarah Boston Andriano as Director of Undergraduate Admissions. "I am thrilled to be joining the Admissions team at Champlain. The community of educators and students here is amazingly warm and supportive," says Andriano, "and I could not have asked to have moved to a better, more beautiful city than Burlington, Vermont.

"Champlain does things differently than I've seen in other institutions--from the career-oriented majors to the Upside-Down Curriculum, which lets students begin serious classes in their major starting in their first semester, from the outstanding internships built into the programs to the solid learning foundation provided by our integrated Core studies--Champlain’s approach is clearly one that focuses on its students' academic and career success."

Andriano comes to Champlain from Boston University, where she was Senior Assistant Director of Admissions. She is a graduate of Union College in Schenectady, NY, and earned her graduate degree in policy, planning and administration from Boston University.

Champlain Prof is Investigator of the Year

SarahDigital forensic crime sleuthing is the stuff of great TV, like NCIS and CSI. But for Champlain professor Jonathan T. Rajewski, it's his life.

Previously employed as a senior consultant for a global consulting firm, where he travelled the world conducting and managing digital forensics investigations, Professor Rajewski is an assistant professor of Computer & Digital Forensics at Champlain College as well as the co-director/principle investigator of the Champlain College Center for Digital Investigation (C3DI) and an examiner for the Vermont Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force.

This past summer, Rajewski was named “Digital Forensic Investigator of the Year” by a jury of his peers in the national and international digital forensics community in a poll conducted by Forensic 4cast—a highly regarded website that provides news and information about the field of digital forensics.

If you are interested in our widely acclaimed Computer & Digital Forensics Program, you may contact Professor Rajewski at Rajewski@champlain.edu
