When the South End Art Hop kicks off on Sept. 5-6, it will feature the works of more than 450 artists at more than 90 different sites, indoors and out. Among those numerous displays will be a cutting-edge fusion of digital art, codes and gaming created by students and faculty at Champlain College's Emergent Media Center.
The annual September weekend of art in expected and unexpected places marks the annual convergence of Burlington's creative artist community and the entrepreneurial business endeavors that blanket the South End neighborhoods. The South End Art Hop, named a Top 10 Fall Event by the Vermont Chamber of Commerce, includes a juried art show, fashion show featuring local designers; and an art-inspired mini-golf course.
A prime example of how businesses, education and artists work together comes from Champlain College's Emergent Media Center, in partnership with Fletcher Free Library and with broadband support from Burlington Telecom. The Champlain College display provides a showcase of an innovative type of fusion: art, code and learning.
It will be on display on the ground floor of Sound Toys at 225 Church St.. Sound Toys is a Burlington-based audio plug-ins software company.
There will be student-crafted interactive games produced with national partners; Google mapping technology customized for Burlington, a sound lab and numerous visual experiences featuring the work of students, staff and faculty at Champlain College.
The exhibit will be open Friday, Sept. 5 from 5 to 8 pm and Saturday, Sept. 6 from 11 am to 5 pm. It is just one of many not-to-be missed stops on the Hop featured during the two-day arts festival sponsored by the South End Arts and Business Association, (SEABA).
