Top Staff and Faculty Awards Announced

Here's a look at some recent awards and special recognition in the Champlain College Community:

James Fry Wins Lyman Professorship Award

James FryChamplain College has awarded the 2010-11 Edward Phelps Lyman Professorship to Professor James S. Fry, Esq. of Essex Junction, VT, the coordinator of Champlain College's Para-Legal Studies Program.
The Edward Phelps Lyman Professorship was established in 1984 and is presented by the Champlain College Board of Trustees to a senior faculty member who has shown dedication to students and Champlain College through a record of service and excellence in teaching and advising and through work on faculty and College committees. The recipient is someone who has demonstrated a commitment to the College to educate people for careers in business and community services through work with students in academics and activities and who is an active citizen of the community at large. The Edward Phelps Lyman Professorship includes a $5,000 award to the recipient.
Past Champlain College Lyman Professorship winners include Colin Ducolon, Eadie Templin, Ann McCluskey, Walt Luchini, Michelle Miller, George Bradford, Alan Stracke, David Mona, Joe O'Grady, Gary Scudder, Janice Gohm Webster, and Susyn Dees.
Fry has managed the Champlain College Paralegal Program singlehandedly for many years. He is part of the team that creates "Law and Order Champlain" crafting a realistic, experiential learning experience for students with the local legal community. He has also served on the Curriculum Committee for two decades and currently is its chair. He served as Associate Dean of the Business Division during a critical transition earlier this year.
He is also a member of the United States Supreme Court Bar. The qualifications are three years in practice, good standing with one's state Supreme Court Bar, and sponsorship from two attorneys who are already members of the US Supreme Court Bar. Fry now has privileges to listen to oral arguments at the Supreme Court and use the Court library.
In making the presentation, Champlain College President David F. Finney said, "A colleague summed it up best in her nominating letter - "It has been my experience that he exhibits everything you could ever want to see in an employee. He loves his students, he loves Champlain, and through his actions he inspires others to do the same."

 

Roland Palmer Wins Durick Staff Service Award

Roland PalmerRoland Palmer of Hinesburg, Vt., manager of Champlain College's Development Operations, was awarded the 2010 Elizabeth A. Durick Staff Service Award, which recognizes a member of the staff who has had a positive impact on the college community.

This annual award, which includes $5,000, is named in honor of the late Elizabeth Durick, who was an exemplary staff member and who also served on the College's Board of Trustees. Recipients of the Durick Award must consistently demonstrate many of the characteristics that allowed Elizabeth Durick to have such a positive and lasting influence on the College - professionalism, dedication and flexibility in the accomplishment of their responsibilities.
Past winner have included Pat Boera, Mike Charron, Jo Corrow, Katie Hawley, Diana Eide, Tammy Miller, Elaine Strunk, and Thomas Bonnette.
In presenting the award, President David F. Finney said "The winner of the 2010 Durick Award creates a culture of caring and respect so vital to productivity, creativity and a sense of community at Champlain. For that, I'm personally thankful."

Champlain College Honors Long-Time Employees

Champlain College recognized some of its long-time employees at its recent 2010 Recognition Event at the Sheraton Hotel and Conference Center.  Champlain President David F. Finney acknowledged the following anniversaries: 40 years - John Lavallee; 35 years - Cliff Gordon and Alan Stracke; 30 years - Geebo Church and Carol Moran-Brown; 25 years - David Mona; and 20 years - Pat Boera, Riki Bowen, Sue Chamberlain, Colleen Long and Sue Rowley.

The College also recognized the faculty promotion of David Mona to Associate Professor and the retirement of Cheryl Burghdurf, Daniel Mahoney, David Modica and Lawrence Mandell.

New Faculty Announced at Champlain College

The Office of the Provost at Champlain College has announced the following new faculty hires:
• In the Core Division, Michael Kelly, assistant professor, The Writing Center, and Dr. Stephen Wehmeyer, instructor, Concepts.
• In the Division of Business: Fritz Burkhardt, assistant professor, Finance.
• In the Division of Communications and Creative Media: Dev Jana, assistant professor, Game Design, and JoAnn Patel, assistant professor, Game Art and Animation.
• Division of Education and Human Studies: Dr. Valerie Esposito, assistant professor and program director, Environmental Studies.
• Division of Information Technologies & Sciences: Dr. Wei Kian Chen, associate professor, Computer Science and Innovation; Dean Lawson, assistant professor, Game Programming; John Pile, Jr., assistant professor, Game Programming; and Jonathan Rajewski, assistant professor, Computer & Digital Forensics.
