Cyber Defense Team In Top Three Spot

The Champlain Cyber Defense team placed third in the Northeast Regional Cyber Defense Competition held in Massachusetts March 4-6. In this three-day event, students work to secure a network and provide services while being attacked by industry professionals and responding to management requests. The competition was hosted by Northeastern University this year and held and the EMC training facilities in Franklin, Mass. Eleven teams from New England participated. Rochester Institute of Technology won the competition and will participate in the National Competition in April.
The Champlain team members this year were: Kevin Reilly (captain), John Briggs, Andrew Grasso, Max McElroy, John Hall, Jon Ferretti, Spencer Goddard, and Nick Kedzierski. Coaches were Zach Tanko and Jim Hoag. All students are Computer Networking and Information Security (CNIS) majors. The team put in a lot of time practicing on Sunday evenings during January and February and Friday afternoons in November and December.
The team travel is sponsored by the CNIS club and SGA. During this year's competition, a member of the team representing management was a Champlain CNIS alum and former Cyber Defense Team member, Charles Nolan '10. Nolan works for SPAWAR who donated employees to participate.
