Program Objectives
Campus Diversity Goals
- Employing a developmental, systemic approach to ensure that we become an interculturally competent campus that is inclusive and welcoming of ALL students, staff and faculty
- Recruiting and retaining a diverse campus community
- Graduating ALL students with the skills they need to thrive in a global, multicultural and interdependent world
- Creating a diverse connected alumni, which diversifies (and therefore increases) our possible gift opportunities
- Becoming a recognized institution/regional leader in campus intercultural development
- An outcome of these efforts will be an increase in the number of underrepresented students for whom Champlain College is the institution of choice
Successfully achieving these goals involves:

- Clear ownership and accountability for initiatives (We are getting there!)
- Measurable outcomes and consistent evaluation
- Campus wide buy in and understanding of foundational terms, concepts, challenges and opportunities - (We are on the way and that is what intercultural U is all about)
- Skill enhancement and acquisition for faculty, staff and students (Again, that is what intercultural U is all about)
Intercultural Certification Program Objectives
As part of a larger systemic effort to develop intercultural competence, the diversity/intercultural certification program seeks to:
- To develop a group of peer trainers/facilitators that can adapt key intercultural concepts to their specific work situations and serve as intercultural resources for their departments and divisions
- To create a critical mass of people with a foundational theory and research supported knowledge of interculturalism
- To begin/expand a grassroots discussion about interculturalism on campus that allows everyone to come to the table in an open and authentic manner
- To continue building capacity for strategic visioning and planning for campus intercultural development
- To ensure that intercultural efforts are truly campus wide by having champions and advocates within various campus stakeholder groups and at all campus levels
Intercultural U Certification Program Learning Outcomes
As a result of the program, certified diversity trainers/facilitators will be able to:
- Explain the Developmental Model of Intercultural Sensitivity
- Identify the first three stages of the model
- Apply the Developmental approach in their intercultural efforts
- Articulate the challenges faced by non dominant populations on our campus and in society
- Describe the differences and overlaps between a cultural and societal focus and the need to include both foci in any intercultural plan
- Conduct diversity training and facilitate diversity dialogues
- Recognize and better manage their own personal triggers
- Recognize personal ethnocentric responses and monolithic representations of others
- Identity and apply tools and strategies for stereotype and prejudice reduction
- Describe the role of culture and identity in interactions and conflict
