English Language Tutoring Services for New American Scholars

Purpose

Champlain College's Office of Diversity and Inclusion is pleased to provide an English Language Tutor for those students who receive the New American Scholarship. The Scholarship was created as a way to support Burlington's growing refugee population and currently hosts students from Bosnia and Herzegovina, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Dominican Republic, Moldova, Russian Federation, Rwanda, Somalia, Togo, Vietnam and Zaire. The purpose of English Language Tutoring Program is to provide additional academic support and to assist students with understanding and completing class assignments. The tutor also provides support to faculty in advising on best teaching practices for working with English language learners (ELLs) in the classroom.

Services Provided by the English Language Tutor:

  • Flexible scheduling and is on campus mornings, afternoons and evenings
  • Works one-on-one with students and can provide assistance outlining, writing and editing papers, identifying reading comprehension strategies and preparation for presentations
  • Support to faculty and provides guidance and advice on appropriate and effective accommodations for English language learners in the classroom
  • Meets with students in central campus locations and also works with students online
  • Weekly Open Office Hours and schedules individual appointments as requested

Eligibility

New American Scholars have priority for this service. However, other students may utilize this service if there is a compelling need for language assistance and if the tutor has additional time to help.
