For Parents

Welcome Parents!

The Champlain College Office of International Education supports various types of study abroad experiences for students. Students may participate in short-term faculty led programs, Champlain Abroad Montréal and Dublin, third-party study abroad programs, or direct enrollment exchange programs.

An international education experience is often a very challenging, rewarding, and enriching period for students. Parents generally feel excitement about their son or daughter studying abroad, but also have questions and concerns about the process. The proactive Office of International Education staff focus heavily on health, safety, and the overall well being of each student. Additionally, we strive to create an academic and career-focused atmosphere which prepares students to be globally engaged citizens and leaders.

Academics

Students studying at the Champlain Abroad campuses in Dublin and Montréal earn Champlain College credit as if they were taking a course in Burlington. All students discuss courses with their faculty advisors and the Office of International Education staff to ensure they are meeting degree requirements and staying on track with their academic and career goals.

The Office of International education encourages all students to begin planning for their Study Abroad experience at least a year in advance. The earlier students begin planning for their study abroad experience, the more seamless the course selection process. For more information about Montréal and Dublin courses, please click the links below:

For third-party and exchange programs students must have courses pre-approved by the appropriate Dean or Program Director. In order to get credit for overseas course work, students must achieve a grade of a C or better. Grades do not transfer, but credits will. Study abroad courses passed with a US equivalent grade of C or better transfer in as a "T" and do not affect GPA in any way. Students will not receive credit for comparable courses already taken at Champlain. It is the students responsibility to attend, prepare for, and pass the classes taken while abroad.

Travel/Arrival Information

A Champlain College representative will meet all Champlain Abroad Dublin students at the airport arriving within the recommended timeframe. Champlain Abroad Montréal students are given clear directions for arriving by car at the residence hall in Montreal. A Champlain College representative will meet students arriving by plane or train within a predetermined timeframe.

Health & Safety

Student safety is a top priority at Champlain College. The Office of International Education makes a concerted effort to ensure student safety, while avoiding unnecessary restrictions on student exposure to the culture in which they are studying and living. At Champlain, an experienced International Task Force is ready to deal with emergencies, and has action plans in place for crisis situations.

In the event of an emergency, please contact campus security at (802) 865-6465. For After hours emergencies, call Safety & Security at (802) 343-4242.

During the semester or year abroad, on-site Resident Directors are in regular communication with the students and the Burlington staff. Students receive detailed health and safety information during the on-site orientation, pre-departure orientation in Burlington, and in information packets sent to students by mail.

Insurance

All students who study abroad on Champlain programs are covered under a comprehensive study abroad health insurance policy through CISI Cultural Insurance Services International. You can view the policy and claim form here. CISI Insurance only provides coverage while outside the United States. Furthermore, the student is only covered during the designated dates of the Champlain Abroad program. To extend the coverage dates for travel before or after the study abroad program, please contact the Office of International Education. It is the student's responsibility to make sure this insurance is adequate for his/her needs. Certain pre-existing conditions and exclusions may apply.

Immigration

Current immigration rules for Ireland and Canada do NOT require students to obtain a visa prior to traveling abroad. The Office of International Education supplies students with important immigration paperwork during the pre-departure process.Students studying at the Champlain Abroad campuses in Montréal and Dublin MUST have this paperwork in hand when passing through immigration. For more detailed information, please contact the Assistant Director of Study Abroad in the Office of International Education at Champlain College. Immigration laws are constantly changing, and it is always a good idea to confirm the most up to date information.

For third-party provider and exchange programs, immigration and visa requirements will vary depending on country. Students are responsible for working with these programs and making sure they have all the necessary documentation for studying abroad.
