Family Orientation Schedule 2011

 

Friday, August 26, 2011:

8:00-11:30 A.M. - RESIDENTIAL STUDENT MOVE IN AND CHECK IN

Your Student's Residence Hall

All residence halls open at 8:00 a.m., so take your students belongings to their room and begin settling in. Also meet the Residential Life Staff and get acquainted with your student's new neighbors. At the residence hall you can also check in with the Orientation staff and pick up your Family Orientation packet.  In this packet you will find the Orientation schedule for the rest of the day as well as other valuable information to ensure your families success at Champlain. 

 

8:00-11:30 A.M. - NUTS AND BOLTS TO BEGINNING YOUR COLLEGE CAREER

Once your student has settled into their residence hall and received their Orientation Packet there are still many loose ends to be tied up and there are resources all around campus ready to assist you in completing these tasks.  

 

Photo ID

IDX, Student Life Center (SLC), Fireside Lounge (FSL)

Your student's ID will be waiting for them in the, Fireside Lounge to pick up at anytime this morning.   If they didn't have a chance to send us a ID photo they can still have a picture taken and pick up their ID this evening back in the FSL. 

 

Put Money on the Cash Card

Forms will be available in the FSL to assist you in adding money to your student's ID card. 

 

Emergency Alert System

All students are required to register for the campus emergency alert system so make sure to stop by to meet the Campus Public Safety Staff and register. The emergency alert system notifies students of any emergency or crisis situation occurring on or near campus. 

 

Sugarbush Ski Pass

Ski Pass Sign-up will also be available to sign up for a season pass.  Passes are available for all full time students for $30 for Mount Ellen and $100 for the all Sugarbush trails.  Not sure how your student will get to the mountain?  Weekly buses will take them to the mountain in peak season and other trips will be arranged over the course of the semester.

Bring their laptop to get their account set up and receive assistance connecting to the network.

 

Purchase Books

College Bookstore

Bring your student's class schedule to the bookstore to purchase books.  The Bookstore Staff will use their class schedule to grab all of your required books for your first semester.   If you already pre-ordered books those are waiting for you to the left of the Bookstore at the Joyce Hall entrance.  All your student will need to do is bring their ID and order number and the staff will happily get you those preordered books. 

 

Set Up a Bank Account

Several of our local banks are available on campus this morning for you to select the best match for you and sign up. 

 

Career Services - Work-Study & Part-Time Jobs

Talk with a member of Career Services to learn how to search and apply for Work-Study and Part-Time job opportunities, find out the name of their Career Advisor and learn about the many other career resources available to your student.

Financial Aid/Work Study

Questions about Work Study?  Financial Aid and Human Resources staff will be here to discuss general questions about your students award and the OnBoarding process.  Bring your student's ID paperwork to finalize your I-9 Form.

  

Parent Relations

Families stop by to sign up for Parent eNewsletter, to receive information on Parent Advisory Council.  The Parent Advisory Council will keep you informed about topics current topics on and off campus.  We will also keep you connected to all dimensions of the College experience. 

 

10:30-11:30 A.M. - CHECK-IN FOR COMMUTER STUDENTS

Students check in to receive Orientation packets. All students may have their ID photo taken, drop off outstanding health forms, pick up books, learn about work-study opportunities, and sign up for bank accounts, if needed. Bring your student's laptop to get an account set up and receive assistance connecting to the network. Ski Pass Sign up will also be available so they can get their seasons pass.

 

11:00-1:00 P.M. - LUNCH FOR STUDENTS, FAMILIES & FRIENDS

IDX, SLC Dining Hall, or Hauke Courtyard

All students, families and friends are invited to enjoy a BBQ. Students may use this time to tie up any loose ends, say goodbye to friends and family, and celebrate the start of their college career.

 

1:00-1:30 P.M. - PRESIDENT'S WELCOME

Join President David Finney, faculty and staff for an official welcome to Champlain College before students begin a weekend of Orientation activities. Also hear from the Director of Admission, Ian Mortimer, and a Student Government Association (SGA) Representative.

 

1:30-1:45 P.M. - STUDENT'S SEND OFF

Students will now begin to transition into their Orientation groups, where they will learn what the rest of the weekend has in store for them. Say goodbye as they leave to begin their new adventure.

 

1:45-2:30 P.M. - TRANSITIONS, EXPECTATIONS & RESOURCES ENSURING SUCCESS

In this session President Finney will provide a framework to help families better understand the transitions college students experience throughout the first year of college. Provost Robin Abramson will explain Champlain's academic expectations, and Leslie Averill the Associate Vice President of Student Life will review additional services available to students.

 

2:30 P.M. - FAMILY GOODBYE GOODIE BAGS

Stop by on your way off campus to pick up a gift bag for the road before you head off campus, courtesy of the Parent Advisory Council. We hope you enjoyed the day and look forward to seeing you at Family Weekend on October 21, 2011.
