John Boomhover knows where he wants to go
His studies at Champlain are part of that career track. With an MBA from Champlain, “I’ll be able to learn and apply new schools of thought on a higher level,” he says. “It will provide me with the skills to analyze business trends and data in order to make the right decision.”
“My goal is to be an executive officer of a company,” says MBA grad student John Boomhover. “I want to be able to help lead a company and make decisions that will improve it and the lives of the people who work for it.” His employer, A.N. Deringer of St. Albans, Vermont, which provides international logistics solutions for import/export, is an enthusiastic partner in his education.
The Champlain MBA appealed to John because “Champlain is different in that it concentrates more on real world learning and application. My desire was to learn in an atmosphere that relates to the job issues I face today, rather than enroll in a ‘theory based’ program.” John appreciates the advantages of online discussions with his classmates. “It’s probably the best learning experience in the program.”
“So far, everyone I have chatted with both online and on the phone is extremely intelligent and talented,” he relates. “Each student brings a unique perspective to the class based on personality, work experiences and life experiences. “On-line discussions,” he continues, “always create a breadth of understanding. I am not just getting the instructor’s perspective on the subject, but the perspectives of everyone in the class. The way they apply their experiences to the material being discussed allows you to learn so much more.”
John obtained his U.S. Customs Brokerage License from the U.S. Department of the Treasury in 1995. He has managed operations for A.N. Deringer in Cincinnati, Ohio, Pembina, N.D., and Blaine, Wash., and has also served as a special projects manager and a national sales representative. John holds associate’s degrees in both general business (’90) and marketing (’92) and a bachelor’s in business management (’93) from Champlain College.
