Home Away From Home

Burlington is a great place to go to college. It offers transportation conveniences with a major airport and easy Interstate access. Plus it is one of the safest cities in the United States, with numerous cultural offerings and cosmopolitan amenities. You'll appreciate that basic supplies are readily accessible, there are many employment opportunities for part-time work and that a car is not necessary.

Champlain's on-campus safety features include 24-hour foot and vehicle patrol, escort service on-demand, shuttle buses to parking lots, emergency telephones, lighted pathways/sidewalks, hard-wired fire alarm and carbon monoxide detector systems throughout every dorm and a combination of punch code and key access to dorms. Alcohol is not permitted on campus regardless of a student's age and all dorms are designated non-smoking.

Practical Tips For Adjusting To Residential Life

  1. Remind your child that exercise and sleep will keep them happier and less stressed.
Champlain's new Fitness Center is a popular social spot as well as a workout facility.

  2. Inform your child that separating colors in the wash really makes a difference: they can avoid getting pink underwear by not mixing reds and whites in one hot load! Residence hall laundries are notorious for shrinking clothes, so remind them to check the wash and dryer temperature.

  3. Let your son or daughter know that support services are available to help them deal with minor and major issues including roommates, residential life, partying, dating, academic stress, career planning concerns and a host of other problems. On Champlain's campus a student Resident Advisor is available to each residence hall, along with an adult Head Resident, the Student Life Office for counseling and peer tutoring and a Student Health Center for medical problems.

  4. As a parent, do your best to reassure your child that you're available to talk, but try not to be intrusive. One of the reasons to send your child away to college is so they will learn to make good decisions on their own when confronted with challenges.

Counseling Services

College is a time for your child's personal growth; they'll constantly be making decisions about academics, personal relationships, lifestyle and career objectives. Occasionally throughout their four years at Champlain, there are times when another listener would be beneficial and it is for these occasions that the Counseling Office exists. All conversations are kept confidential within professional and legal guidelines. Encourage your child to take advantage of this wonderful resource. It's a sign of maturity and confidence when a student takes the initiative to seek advice and counseling.

Mail Service and Care Packages

Parents and friends can order special treats to be delivered to Champlain students through our Sodexo dining service by calling (802) 860-2719 to order a birthday cake, cookies, "chocolate therapy", pizza, a giant Rice Krispie treat or something more personalized for a late-night snack or celebration.

Care packages are always appreciated.
