Champlain College Celebrates 50 Years on the Hill
(Excerpt from Burlington Free Press Article By Tim Johnson on June 29, 2008)
Champlain College celebrated its 50-year anniversary on Burlington's Hill Section Saturday, throwing open its historic buildings for sightseers and offering free food and festivities on the lawn behind Perry Hall, the college's next major restoration project.
The fete, culminating events that began Thursday, drew alumni, former staffers and neighborhood residents to mark the college's remarkable transformation over five decades.
President David Finney, in noontime remarks to a crowd assembled for a picnic-style lunch, said the college was still committed, as always, to "career-oriented education and the human touch."
Gov. Jim Douglas was there to offer his congratulations, and a Grace Coolidge impersonator, in period dress, hobnobbed with visitors. (The house on Maple Street where Grace Goodhue married Calvin Coolidge in 1905 was acquired by Champlain College in 1988 and is used for office space.)
A few numbers sum up the college's rapid growth over the last half-century:
1958: One building; about 60 students; two-year associate degree programs.
2008: 42 buildings; about 1,950 undergraduates; four-year bachelor's degree programs; two online master's degree programs.

Words from a Champlain parent:
"Champlain College has indeed been a perfect fit for my son Peter. I'd be hard pressed to name all the ways, but a few come to mind. The geography is perfect; the campus is beautiful with a homey feel and lovely architecture in the charming town of Burlington and Vermont itself. Peter's educational growth, his handling of responsibility, and his internal well being has all taken an upward turn during his time at Champlain."

Student Jobs on Campus
Many departments on campus hire students each semester. While the majority of campus jobs are work-study jobs, there are opportunities for all students on campus. Visit careerservices.champlain.edu for more information on jobs on campus. The Career Services Office posts jobs on the EASE job system that you can view at: http://ecampusrecruiter3.com/champlain/
Champlain College Work-Study Work-study is part of some students' financial aid. Subsidized by the Federal government, the program helps non-profit businesses (including the College and area organizations) hire students by absorbing a large portion of the cost associated with their employment. The Financial Aid Office uses a formula based on income and need to determine eligibility. The current work-study wage is $8.00/hour or $8.50/hour for students who work off-campus.
The Career Services Office posts work-study jobs on the EASE job system that you can view at: http://ecampusrecruiter3.com/champlain/. Students are also welcome to drop by our office during office hours (M-F 8:30 am-5 pm) to do a job search here in our student workspace. Generally, employers don't advertise positions for the new school year until mid-August. Qualified students receive a work-study information packet several weeks before school starts. The work-study job fair is on September 10, 2008 in the Hauke Conference Center from 10:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m.

- The student body is approximately 44% female and 56% male
- Our students are recommended by their high school counselors and teachers as committed, independent students who have the motivation, intellectual curiosity and ability to grow both academically and professionally
- Our students are unusually entrepreneurial and interested in community service
- In high school, Champlain students pursued a college preparatory curriculum with five academic courses per semester, including a minimum of:

Champlain College Greenhouse Gas Emissions Among the Lowest in Northern U.S.
Champlain College's greenhouse gas emissions-per-student are among the lowest for colleges in the northern U.S., based on a recently concluded carbon inventory and assessment of its facilities and operations. [download the report PDF here]
Conducted by Spring Hill Solutions, a carbon management and energy solutions consulting firm based in Burlington, Vermont, the study is intended to serve as a guiding document as Champlain continues its efforts in carbon management and sustainability, said Michel George, associate vice president of planning and auxiliary services. "This is one step toward what we hope is a more efficient and sustainable campus."
The study inventoried emissions related to facility heating, electricity purchases, student, faculty, and staff commuting, college fleet fuel usage, class field trips, travel to conferences and student recreational trips, travel from student hometowns to campus, travel to study abroad locations, waste generation, fertilizer use, and refrigeration system leakages.
The study shows that from 1999 through 2007, Champlain College emitted an average of 4,437 metric tons of greenhouse gasses (GHG) per year. In 2007, the College emitted 5,237 tons, or 2.7 tons per full-time student, compared with an average of 8.5 tons per student at ten northern US colleges. Other findings include:
- Nearly half of Champlain's carbon footprint comes from transportation-related emissions; the College has been working aggressively to reduce this figure. Champlain now offers faculty and staff free access to the CCTA bus system. Champlain recently won the Way To Go Commuter Challenge, a regional competition designed to reduce car trips through the promotion of alternative commuting strategies.
- Champlain's GHG per student emissions have increased by an average of 0.5% per year from 1999-2007, but decreased an average of 0.4% per year on a square-footage basis.
- On a per student basis, Champlain's emissions are some of the lowest calculated for the northern U.S. Factors in this performance include a compact campus with a low building to student ratio, few energy intensive labs, use of low-emission energy sources by the Burlington Electric Department, and proactive energy and transportation management initiatives.
"We hope that our partnerships with Burlington Electric Department, Chittenden Solid Waste District and Campus Area Transportation Management Association, coupled with our own initiatives, will enable us to reduce our carbon footprint even more and to become a collegiate and community leader in addressing climate change," George said.
