Get a Great Start on Your New Life!
No matter how big or small a move from one home to another, moving is one of life's greatest stresses--this is no less true when you are moving from your family home to your college residence hall. Still, with a little planning ahead, applying some tried-and-true organizational tactics, and understanding the rules and regulations, you can make your transition a smooth one. Here’s a quick Move-in Survival Guide to get your move moving in the right direction!
Before You Leave Home
Get on the same page as your new roommate(s): reach out, make contact with your roomies.
Figure out what you might need or want in your shared space and who can bring what to avoid cluttering up your living areas with duplicated items. Here’s a list of things to think about to get you started:
- Mini refrigerators
- Televisions
- Floor lamps
- Fans (while some buildings have AC, not all do. You will want one for your room until the weather cools down!)
To Bring or Not To Bring...These are the Answers
Because space at college may not be as large as space you have at home, it is imperative to closely consider the items you do not need as well as the items you can get from home at a later date. If your family does not live far from Burlington, consider bringing mostly seasonal clothing and changing it out when you visit home.
Do Bring:
- Stackable Crates
- Laundry Supplies (Detergent, Hamper/Easy-to-Carry Basket, etc.)
- Iron for Clothing
- Clothes Hangers
- First-Aid Kit (Band-Aids, Antibiotic Ointment, Aspirin, etc.)
- Desk Lamp
- Fan
- Small Trash Can
- Pillows
- Extra-Long Twin Sheets and Mattress Pad
- Blankets, Comforter, & Quilt
- Mini-Refrigerator (Maximum Size of 4.6 Cubic Feet)
- Toiletries and Container for Them
- White Board & Dry Erase Markers
- Towels
- Small Dishware Items (Plate, Bowl, Cutlery, Mug for Coffee, etc.)
Don’t Bring (really, don’t bring them; these are prohibited except as noted):
- Halogen Lamps
- Toasters (Except in Quarry Hill and Spinner Place)
- Hot Plates
- Pets (Except for Fish in Tanks of 10 Gallons or Less)
- Large Furniture
- Microwaves (Every building will have one available for use.)
- Coffee Makers (Except in Quarry Hill and Spinner Place)
- Candles
- Rice Cookers
- Blender (Except in Quarry Hill and Spinner Place)
- Extension Cords
- Dart Boards
- Air Soft Guns, Paint Balls, BB Guns
- Sub-Woofer Systems
- Gym Equipment
- Air-Conditioners
How Move-in Day Unfolds
Step One: Go to your assigned Residence Hall.There, you will follow the instructions of hall staff and traffic for unloading your belongings and parking your vehicle. You will have time to go shopping to pick up any last minute items. Meet your roommate(s) and work together to begin setting up your room/shared spaces.
Step Two: Go to main campus to check in for Orientation. Check-in for Orientation, have lunch with your family, and complete any tasks such as picking up your ID, buying your books, etc.
HINT: You can save yourself some time by e-mailing a photo for your ID card ahead of time. This will make the process go quicker as you will not have to wait in a long line to have your picture taken that morning.
Step Three: Wave to your family as they drive away. After a few speeches, the President of the College will tell your friends and loved ones to let you get on with your life at Champlain College. After the folks have all driven off, you’ll be directed to the various Orientation activities.
