Off-Campus Living
Living Off-Campus in the Burlington Area
While Champlain College prides itself on the quality and diversity of its residence halls, we understand that for some students, living on-campus might not be the best fit. Because we believe that a comfortable living situation can play an important role in overall academic success, we are committed to providing resources to help students who wish to live off campus find apartments and houses for rent in the Burlington area.

Looking for a Roommate?
Many of the rental options around campus are designed for more than one person, and, especially if you are a new student, you may not know other students also looking for off-campus housing. Use the links below to find roommates who are also Champlain College students; you'll already have one thing in common!

"I'm studying abroad in the fall or spring and only need a rental for a semester."
With so many Champlain College students taking advantage of study abroad opportunities, it's easy for students traveling outside of the U.S. for the Fall Term to sublet or 'trade' housing with someone leaving for the Spring Term (or vice versa). Download our virtual bulletin board (Download in MS Excel or Adobe PDF) to find students taking a semester abroad looking for housing trades. Email Jason Borges to put yourself on the bulletin board.
"Any advice on where to look, local rental laws, etc?"
Finding your best living option can be overwhelming. A lease is a legal contract and should only be signed after careful research and consideration. Just as you will to supply references to a property manager/landlord, you should, likewise, obtain reviews of them. Sites such as Apartment Ratings can be a a great resource; Google will be your friend during this journey. Additionally, download the Off-Campus Living Survival Guide published by our colleagues at the University of Vermont. It contains valuable information including rental laws for the City of Burlington, steps you should take if you are experiencing problems with your landlord, and tips for developing good rental history.
"Do I need a car in Burlington?"
This is a personal decision: some students prefer the convenience of having their own vehicle, while others feel not owning a car is an easy way to cut down on living expenses. Burlington places a very high value on public transportation and has numerous buses, shuttles, car shares and carpool programs that make it easy to get around without a personal vehicle. Visit CATMA for more information on these services. If you do choose to bring your own car to campus, be sure to review Champlain College's parking guidelines and contact Carl Riden in Public Safety with any questions.
