Frequently Asked Questions

Summer FAQs

I am not a Champlain College student, may I take summer courses without being admitted to the College?
Yes! You do not need to apply to the College to take summer courses. You may register for any course you would like, although if a course has prerequisites you must have met them before registering.

I am a student at another college. Are there special arrangements I should make to attend Champlain in the summer?
The most important thing you should do is make sure that the course you take here will transfer to your college, if you are hoping to use the credits toward your graduation requirements. We are a regionally accredited institution, however our credits are transferable only at the discretion of the receiving institution. It is up to your school to determine if the course you take with us meets their transfer guidelines. We recommend talking with your school’s transfer credit officer, or your academic advisor, about this prior to registering.

I am a high school student, can I take classes at Champlain this summer?
Yes! You may take our summer courses. Please contact us to be sure you meet the pre-requisites of the course you would like to take. You may need special permission of the instructor or program director as well. Please call (802) 865-6486 or email cps@champlain.edu with questions.

Are there restrictions on the courses I may take?
You must meet any prerequisite requirements.

Is there a maximum number of credits I can take in the summer?

Due to the condensed schedule, we recommend that students take no more than 6 credits per session. Please be advised that these are courses that are traditionally taught in a 15 week format, and so courses move very quickly. Students wishing to take more than 7 credits a session, or 14 or more credits total, must be granted permission. Please contact us at arc@champlain.edu or (802) 860-2777 for more information.

I want to take a course, but I don’t want the credit. Can I audit a course?
Yes, you may audit a course. Auditing a course costs half the tuition, but you do not get a grade for the course. If you need to receive credit or a grade for the course you must take the course for credit. If you choose to audit a course, please be advised that audits are allowed only on a space available basis one week prior to course start date. Please contact us at 888-545-3459 for more information regarding auditing a course.

What do I do if I wish to drop a course?
In case of voluntary withdrawal or dismissal from the College, a portion of the tuition may be refunded. Students must notify the Registrar in writing of their intent to withdraw from a course by emailing arc@champlain.edu. The date this written withdrawal notification is received by the Registrar, or the effective date, whichever is later, becomes the official withdrawal date and the basis for refund calculation. Such refunds, assuming that all financial obligations have been met, will be computed based on the published refund schedule.

What happens if a course I’ve registered for is cancelled?
We require a minimum of six students to run a course, and while we do our best to create a schedule that suits the most number of students, occasionally a course will not run due to lack of enrollment. If this happens with a course you are registered for an advisor will contact you to let you know the course is being cancelled, and he or she will work with you to find a suitable alternative. If no alternative can be found, any money already paid will be fully refunded.

Can I change my registration (add or drop courses)?
Because Summer Session courses are very brief and very intensive, we strongly encourage students to consider their choices carefully before they register. If you add a course after the first few days of our accelerated summer sessions you will have a very difficult time making up the material. If you wish to drop a course, please reference the refund table. You must notify the Advising & Registration Center in writing of your intent at arc@champlain.edu. No other communication will be accepted as official. Additionally, simply not attending class is not considered an official withdrawal and will be reflected as a grade of "F."

How long will I be in class? How much homework will I have?
When considering how much work you will have, bear in mind that Summer Session courses are intensive and rigorous, and are equivalent to courses that last fifteen weeks during the rest of the academic year. Your daily schedule will depend upon your courses; consult the days and times listed under the descriptions of your courses.

Are there classes on Memorial Day?
