Academic Divisions
DIVISION OF BUSINESS
Champlain is located in a state that has the highest number of entrepreneurs and independent business owners per capita in the country, which makes this an ideal place to network with professionals and learn by doing at a variety of well-known businesses. Our programs in Accounting, Business with marketdriven specializations, International Business and Marketing have been built by faculty who are experts in their fields and who embrace the Vermont business values of Sustainability, Corporate Responsibility, Entrepreneurship and Work/Life Balance. Our faculty members understand how the business environment works because many have been there, working in full-time positions in nonprofit environmental organizations, Fortune 500 companies, and travel and tourism resorts as well as starting and running their own businesses. In the Division of Business at Champlain College, you will be learning business theory and principles from faculty whose academic backgrounds include CPAs, MBAs and Ph.D.s. Our faculty know that “learning by doing” helps you develop the strong entrepreneurial sensibilities you’ll need to keep your career on track no matter what the economic climate.
DIVISION OF COMMUNICATION & CREATIVE MEDIA
Communication and creative media have experienced more change in the past 10 years than they had in the previous 100, and in the CCM Division, students learn the newest trends in these exciting professions. Nowhere else in the country can you study this broad range of majors under one roof. Whether it’s Game Design or Graphic Design & Digital Media, Digital Filmmaking or Public Relations, Game Art & Animation or Professional Writing, Broadcast & Streaming Media or Communication, the CCM Division at Champlain College is committed to providing the highest-quality, most up-to-date and most professionally relevant majors available anywhere in the country. This innovation and drive for excellence comes, first and foremost, from our outstanding faculty. Their combination of professional experience and academic credentials embodies the integration of professional and liberal learning that defines Champlain. Our faculty work tirelessly to refine their craft, and they bring their wealth of experience and innovation right into the classroom. Those same faculty members are also pushing the envelope of extracurricular learning as they engage literally hundreds of students in real-world communication and creative media projects.
DIVISION OF EDUCATION & HUMAN STUDIES
"Careers that matter to people"—that is how one student describes the focus of programs in this Division. Encompassing many different professions, our majors attract students who care about others: the born educator, the natural confidante, the team player. From the first day of classes, you will benefit from your Champlain faculty’s expertise and connections. Robert Simpson, J.D., who served as Vermont’s assistant attorney general and as a Chittenden County state’s attorney, has developed a pioneering course on securing digital evidence in Criminal Justice. Dr. Linda Rodd is introducing a new course called The Psychology of Altruism and Aggression. Dr. Kathy Leo-Nyquist is well known in the region as a reading specialist. Dr. Colin Ducolon has taught preschool through grade 12 and has extensive experience mentoring elementary and secondary student teachers. Laurel Bongiorno is president of the Vermont Association for the Education of Young Children. Fred Koch, who earned his master’s degree in social work, has spent a tremendous amount of time in the field. Expect to amass significant experience. Education students are in the classroom with children from their first semester. Criminal Justice students have interned at the FBI’s Criminal Justice Information Services department and with the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center (FLETC). As a result, our alumni succeed in many fields as well as in law and other graduate programs.
DIVISION OF INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY & SCIENCES
Game Programming. Computer & Digital Forensics. Mobile & Web Application Development. Champlain's Division of Information Technology & Sciences will prepare you for a world of technology yet unimagined. Because the technology field is driven by unprecedented innovation and relentless change, programs in Champlain College’s Division of Information Technology & Sciences are designed specifically to help you think in the language of technology so you will be able to continually provide innovative, sound and ethical technology solutions in your career—no matter what world-altering technology pops up in the future. Whether you choose to focus on Software Engineering for Emerging Technologies, Computer Information Technology or Computer Networking & Information Security or one of our other areas of study, you will learn current, career-specific technology by working directly with the latest equipment, software and systems. By learning how to spot innovative trends and shifts in technology and understand their implications, you will develop the skills and critical-thinking abilities it takes to quickly embrace and productively exploit new technology as it emerges.
